In acquisition news last week, streaming audio service Spotify announced that it is buying SoundBetter, a music talent marketplace. Founded in 2012, SoundBetter connects musical artists with each other. To date, they’ve helped tens of thousands of musical artists buy and sell services around the world. More than 180,000 artists, including singers, songwriters, producers, musicians, and mixing and mastering engineers, are registered on SoundBetter. The company calls itself the “de facto LinkedIn for music professionals.”

Terms of the deal were not disclosed. For now, SoundBetter will continue to operate as usual, but in the “coming months,” Spotify for Artists said SoundBetter will work on improving the user experience.

“SoundBetter offers the most comprehensive global marketplace for music and audio production professionals for hire in the world along with a member community spanning 176 countries and 14,000 cities worldwide,” said Shacar Gilad, SoundBetter co-founder and CEO, in a September 12 news release. “We are excited to benefit from Spotify’s global scale, resources, and vision to expand our network and drive more economic opportunities for artists of all levels.”

In an interview with Spotify, Gilad explained how their music marketplace benefits artists.

“Imagine being in Japan and being able to hire a songwriter from LA who worked on your favorite song, or being in Germany and getting your track mixed by a Grammy Award winner from New York, or being in LA and having a string quartet from Hungary record tracks on your record. SoundBetter helps fill the gap between recording and distribution. It’s relatively easy to record music, but difficult to get your music to sound good enough for distribution,” Gilad said. “We connect artists with the top music pros who can help them sound the best that they can, so they can focus on whatever they do best, whether that’s songwriting, singing, or producing.”

Beckwith Kloss, Spotify’s vice president product, creator, commented on the deal.

“As we build out our tools for creators, we want to give them the resources they need to thrive. SoundBetter has the same vision,” said Kloss. “We're excited that creators can generate income through SoundBetter, as well as benefit from its network of top professionals - from instrumentalists to songwriters to producers - as they perfect their tracks.”

In the news release, Spotify said it is investing in company’s like SoundBetter to provide creators with tools to create, connect and build their fan base through Spotify for Artists. Spotify currently has more than 400,000 artists and teams using their platform.

What’s next for SoundBetter? Gilad told Spotify what he hopes their partnership will help them achieve.

“We’re really thrilled at the opportunity to take SoundBetter to the next level with Spotify. One of the things that kept us going through this startup rollercoaster over the past few years is hearing stories from artists who tell us we’ve changed their lives. Talented folks who, thanks to SoundBetter, quit their day jobs and are doing music full time and earning a respectable living. We’ve heard endless personal stories like that, and there’s nothing more rewarding. We truly believe that with Spotify, we can make the number of artists who have such stories much, much bigger,” said Gilad.

Insider Take:

This is an exciting acquisition for Spotify and a great opportunity for SoundBetter. For Spotify, they get the chance to support creators by helping them connect with each other, while also gaining an advantage over their competitors. For SoundBetter, the company has expanded resources to scale their operation, improve the user experience for artists and to support musical artists and the music industry on a larger scale.
