People appear to be more stressed than ever figuring out their career plans, recovering from the pandemic, and plotting their next moves. And the increased pace of getting things done adds to their stress levels. Adding to the challenges is that people sometimes need to catch up on the facts. Recipients are in the same situation and tend to respond too quickly with a harsh tone that is seen and felt. The response is only suitable for harming future business.

For all types of businesses, sports, and personal matters, the all-time best strategy is diplomacy with the attempt to maintain and further build relationships. Upon seeing our effort to respond to a calamity calmly and find a better way to proceed, we learn that handling upsets diplomatically can convert into opportunity. Most of all, remain motivated to continue moving forth to succeed ultimately!

My Story

Due to the ups and downs in our careers, the news, and outside forces appearing to interfere with our success, we often consider quitting. Sports figures and legends have much to teach society in a good way. Accordingly, the well-known phrase first uttered by Yogi Berra comes to mind as it applies well to our blog theme, and that is always to strive to convert the worst into opportunity. 

Yogi Berra coined the phrase:’ It isn’t over until it’s over.’

BBC News Magazine wrote an explanation in part:

American baseball legend Yogi Berra first uttered the phrase about baseball’s 1973 National League pennant race. His team was far behind when he said it, and they eventually rallied to win the division title. It tells people to wait, not make judgments, because they can turn the struggle around.

We sometimes make appointments that we cannot keep or forget something we agreed to do. Forewarning and apologies in these instances help the relationship to move forward. Other times, requests may be time-consuming; the other person attends to the matter only to learn it wasn’t necessary. 

Like negotiating successfully, we each are to accept that most everyone errs. Acceptance is the better policy, whether it’s the other party or us at any given moment. Arguments and making another feel foolish achieves little, whereas encouragement for making corrections give motivation and encouragement. Appreciation is ours when our clientele experiences a goodwill environment. We can then enjoy ongoing business.

It always works in our favor to be the person who thinks positively and encourages and inspires others to continue trying their best. Going the extra mile always adds a star to our name. In the event of a mishap, use laughter to lighten the burden and move forward. The encouragement will often inspire new possibilities and opportunities not previously possible.

The only way to move forward and improve your success to date for a better tomorrow is to reflect on your habitual reactions to challenging situations when you respond. It is good to recognize and admit if upsets get you down and the typical demeanor you use when disappointment hits. Admit if you would do business with another if they react the same way you typically do. Often the answer will be no. I would instead find another with whom to work.

A better reaction is to let your stress go with exercise or enjoying the outdoors. Observe the people and the nature surrounding you and allow new ideas to flow. Doing so allows for more profound thought on how to proceed, conjures up new visions, and then excitement may return to work on new projects. Often, a mishap can be for the better as we redirect ourselves to new projects and goals. In the meantime, we realize where the disconnect took place and can pick up the conversation where it left off with humor and ease. The more relaxed nature of communication can and will convert into opportunity with a composed mindset.

Similar to selling and putting the customer’s wishes first, consider what is essential to the people in your company. Especially before the holidays arrive, take time to contemplate the people you will be celebrating. Likewise, consider the people you work with and ask about their holiday plans. The conversations and thoughts may contribute to impromptu ideas that will add creativity to the work you have underway and convert it into an opportunity not previously realized.

In Conclusion: Handling Upsets Diplomatically

A positive demeanor and mindset will attract attention, and combined with enthusiasm plus a collaborative tone, will encourage surprise opportunities. By monitoring new episodes of the good, bad, and ugly, we may also realize that ‘it isn’t over until it’s over!’
