Typically, we hear sarcasm in the tone of another’s voice upon being asked the question, ‘Who do you think you are?’ Hopefully, the sarcastic question will give you the proper spirit to explore the question from multiple angles in your spare time. Little does the person know that they become ‘the one’ prompting you to analyze all your talent to achieve the success you desire.
The next step is to use every bit of free time to ponder the question and what you ‘wish’ you could be doing to enjoy future accomplishments. Be faithful to forthcoming ideas to examine them from all directions and test what may work best for you. Ultimately, satisfaction will be your new reality. Why?
Sometimes it is the most hurtful commentary that holds the key to your future success. My experiences were to examine the remarks from multiple angles to see if any elements on my end were missing; test them, and if they performed well, I would add them to the repertoire. All the while, it was an opportunity to learn what works well and which strategy to forego.
It was many years later, after comparing the personal and business efforts plus commentary, that I realized the ironic lessons in each negative statement thrust at me. The most common phrase was, ‘Are you crazy? That will never work!’
Rather than being thrown off my ‘game,’ I would slyly smile and ask, ‘Why do you believe that?’ The best part was that, typically, the other person had no answer. My guess is that jealousy entered the picture only because I believed I could and would. It brings back memories of my favorite childhood book, ‘The Little Engine That Could.’ At a young age, I took the words to heart, including, ‘Yes I Can!’
Business Gamification
Being either a single female or one of the few among many males in the corporate sales world necessitated gamification and proving ‘Yes, I can!’ The more jeers I received, the deeper the conversations became with the clientele. In some cases, prospects, clients, and I confided in one another for encouragement; all the while, sales grew.
Accordingly, one business strategy that works well is to be professionally friendly and offer a helping hand. Most likely, others will reciprocate. Similarly, we do well by building collaborative efforts. Initially, it may be a rare person who has the desire to work with us, but as we persist and they see our budding success, those who align with our values often ask to collaborate.
Exponential results become the bottom line for being steadfast in the commitment to oneself and the public in general. As more people offer to contribute, the results can become stunning. Upon realizing my refusal over the years to ‘give in’ and ‘give up’ the Elite Business Chronicles Magazine asked permission to publish my story. They emphasize my being a trailblazer embracing resilience.
The Q&A Pros and Cons
It’s vital to not only believe in oneself but also weigh all pros and cons that we hear and experience to make the final decision of whether or not to proceed. By asking the negative people offering undesirable remarks why they believe what they state, most will stammer and walk away. Generally, their downplay is due to jealousy. On the other hand, those who genuinely believe what they say may have elements for the process that we may have overlooked. And that’s why it is critical always to ask questions regarding a person’s thinking concerning their statements.
Results Driven
Early in one’s career, it is vital to remain motivated, and an excellent method for doing so is to recall the initial negativity we hear and the result of the issue. Even if something failed to perform as we expected, the commitment to learn lessons and a better path forward makes the initial activity well worth it. The sales profession teaches one to focus on year-end results, also known as the sales numbers, and accountants focus on the bottom line. Similarly, we need to focus on our results, good and bad, to turn the corner for improvement and continue our path forward.
