Anger can often be an immediate response to hearing demeaning remarks, both personally and professionally, but showing feelings typically does not work to our advantage in situations like these. Having been among bullies in my youth and later among highly competitive and non-inclusive salesmen in corporate sales, varying my responses became routine. The practice helped me realize that diplomacy and questions typically work well, and clients appreciate it.

The expression to embrace is, ‘Practice makes perfect’ – but the practice I suggest will surprise most; the purpose is to throw the person or people off their game. Instead of showcasing anger, smile! Yes, that’s correct, smile, and respond with, ‘Oh, I never thought of that, please explain why you are saying it.’ 

Most often, due to the unexpected response, people will stumble and quickly depart. However, suppose the person is brave enough to remain in our presence; we can then ask them many questions to determine whether there’s an element of validity to the statement that warrants our attention, or if jealousy drives their concern about being surpassed. Be Grounded

Too often, we allow the wrong emotions to take over challenging situations, such as responding with nastiness in our tone of voice and selection of words. But that is the worst response for learning, growing, and conducting business. The better type of emotion is to take a person off guard with your smile, to ask them, ‘Please tell me more, as I’m curious what is prompting you to say that.’ Often, the person will look dumbfounded and walk away.

While staying the course to hear what some might courageously say to you requires a firm balance, both personally and literally. Should you hear an undesirable comment, it’s best to maintain your smile and ask why the person is making such a statement. Typically, that response alone will take them off guard, but if it doesn’t hear out what they have to say. Occasionally, a nugget of golden advice will help one realize the better route. But if that does not occur, it’s best to excuse oneself to avoid getting into a fight.

Diplomacy Encourages Business Growth

Typically, unwelcome commentary comes from those who believe they compete with us. When we hear snide or dismissive comments, we can hold our own by planting a smile and inquiring why they feel that way, and it will often stop them in their tracks. Those who do not have a ‘comeback’ or answer will walk away, but others often stop in admiration of one’s courage to ask.

On the other hand, prospective clients may dismiss an idea we suggest. However, by asking why they believe it’s a bad idea for their business, the question typically prompts the person to wonder why we are asking. Accordingly, the conversation deepens to almost magically uncover possibilities for working together.

Expand the Effort for Greater Results

Long ago, my commitment to community service began with teaching job seekers on how to sell themselves on interviews.’ I’ll never forget the experience before one of my first presentations. A man walked into the room and straight toward me to say, ‘I’m here to prove to myself that your instruction is complete nonsense!’ Undoubtedly, most people would have walked away from the man, but not me. Instead, I stated the following:

‘We each have different ideals. I request that you listen to the full course and let me know your thoughts after I reveal the information. The surprise look on his face let me know the intention was to insult me, but my calmness had the man agreeing to speak with me afterwards. When the time came for me to ask for his perspective, he said, ‘I owe you an apology!’ You provided remarkable insights, and I will use them from now on!
