Membership is growing at new and existing clubs, while higher-tier membership has reached a record.
BJ’s Wholesale Club finished its second quarter with a record 8.5 million members. Membership fee income rose 9.9% from a year ago to $135.6 million.
CEO Bob Eddy told investors that BJ’s has added more than 1 million members over the past two years. Membership is growing at established clubs too. Once recent openings are taken out, membership was up 2% to 3% during the quarter.
BJ’s credited new members and strong retention for the increase in fee income. More customers are also choosing higher-tier memberships.
Higher-tier membership reaches a record
BJ’s charges $60 a year for its standard Club membership. Club+, its higher-priced consumer tier, costs $120. About 43% of BJ’s members are now in a higher-tier membership, the highest share the company has reported.
Eddy said those members spend more and renew at higher rates. They also shop across more of BJ’s business.
Participation in BJ’s Easy Renewal program also reached another record during the quarter. In addition, BJ’s opened three clubs during the quarter and now has 267 locations across 22 states.
Last year’s price increase is fading
BJ’s raised its annual membership prices in January 2025, taking Club from $55 to $60 and Club+ from $110 to $120.
The higher prices have contributed to membership fee income growth over the past year. Chief Financial Officer Laura Felice said that benefit will continue to fade through fiscal 2026, and BJ’s expects fee income growth to slow later this year.
For the quarter, total revenue rose 15.7% to $6.23 billion. Comparable club sales excluding gasoline increased 3.1%.
Insider Take
BJ’s has 8.5 million members. Eddy is paying close attention to who those members are. He told investors that what matters most is “the quality of the membership base we’re building.."
Right now, more members are choosing higher-tier memberships, and those members tend to renew at higher rates and spend more.
The next few quarters may be especially revealing. With less help from the 2025 price increase, the performance of the membership itself will be easier to see.
