question marks as headsAs a new hire, it?s easy to get caught up in the impressions game?always look good, always sound smart, and always be on top of your game. That?s the mantra of many employees entering a new work environment, and for good reason. Sometimes, putting on a game face and jumping in headfirst is the best way to feel confident in a new environment. Other times, however, a ?fake it ?till you make it? attitude actually makes the adjustment into a new workplace culture more difficult. It can be tricky to gauge what constitutes a longer lunch break on Fridays or how much your new boss appreciates workplace chatter, for example.
That?s why as a new employee, it?s particularly important to take advantage of the resources around you. Experienced coworkers, the HR department, and company introduction materials can all help answer your questions. The important thing is to ASK, so you don?t sabotage your own self-confidence. In honor of national ?Ask a Stupid Question? day, we want to remind new employees (and seasoned ones who might be learning some new tricks): get over the fear that your questions are silly and ask away. By reaching out, you?ll learn the ins and outs of the game and be on your feet in no time.
