When we are sad or afraid, it often feels like it will last forever … like being in the middle of an ocean. The power of fear or sadness is the loss of hope that things will be better in the future.

When someone sends us a life raft to keep us from drowning in fear or sorrow, it gives us time to see the truth that the fear and sadness do reduce, and even go away … at least for long enough to catch our breath. The holidays are often a sad time of year for some people … maybe for you.

“Life rafts” for others is often simple kindness, perhaps listening or letting them know you care. The power of the gift of kindness is that it benefits both the receiver and the giver.  I was staying in a hotel on Christmas Eve this season and felt empathy for those who needed to work on a holiday. I left a larger tip than usual for the person cleaning our room. When I ran into her in the hall the next day, she struggled with her English to say an enthusiastic thank you. The gesture clearly cheered her up and it also cheered me up to realize how meaningful a small gesture on my part had been so impactful for her.

The more we help each other and care for each other … including strangers … the safer the waters of sorry and fear will be for each of us.
