Although parts of the U.S. are reopening and people are slowly returning to places of business, many companies are still operating remotely and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future.

The changes in the business environment have been exceedingly challenging for all leaders, and you should feel great about keeping things together as much as you have during the past three months.

That said, there is no question that “remote fatigue” has set in. Crankiness is increasing while patience is decreasing.

You know that you set the tone. When leaders are cranky, this behavior spreads throughout their company. If they are patient and civil, this too permeates. And when leaders are invisible, all bets are off.

More than ever, the mood and behavior of leaders are critical, and civility is an essential quality.

This isn’t the time say that your employees are lucky to have jobs (they know this). It’s also not the time to be cranky, critical, rude, or self-important.

On the contrary, it’s the time to be human. It’s time to show patience and appreciation…probably more than you’re accustomed to. It’s time to say thank you.

Yes, it’s tough for everyone. But you set the tone.
