Insight-oriented psychotherapy is designed to help you understand why you do the things that you do. The premise behind this therapy is that the better you know yourself, the easier it is going to be for you to function.

The better you function, the better you’re going to be able to relate with others, which will allow you to see a marked improvement in your life. It is designed to help you improve your social life, your academic life, your athletic life and even your work. The goal is to teach you how you function and why you function. It is designed to help you clearly see what it is that motivates you.

During insight-oriented psychotherapy, you will be helped to understand that in the same way that your external world affects you, so does your internal world. It determines how you respond to the things around you. So, during the therapy sessions, you’re going to be helped to interpret your internal world. And the self-knowledge you attain is going to give you freedom.

When you better understand how you work, you realize that you have more power over the decisions that you make than you once thought. You have more choices available to you in any given situation. Old habits that you felt that you could not break from or destructive patterns of behavior that have held you back can be overcome. Once you understand how you work on the inside, you are able to develop new patterns as you see fit. The goal of insight-oriented therapy is to provide you with an internal sense of freedom that is then reflected in your external freedom to make the choices that are right for you.

Insight-oriented therapy is based on the idea that your unconscious mental life is having an effect on your everyday life. If you feel uncomfortable about things, this lack of comfort is caused by something that is affecting you on the inside, but you don’t consciously know what it is. Therefore, the goal of this therapy is to take your unconscious fears, your unconscious desires and your unconscious motivations and make them conscious. This will give you the freedom to overcome or avoid unknown blockages that are currently stopping you from performing at your best.

For some people, the idea of an unconscious mental life is new. Many have a hard time believing it. However, after having these therapy sessions, most skeptics are forced to accept that their unconscious thoughts and their unconscious feelings are having a real effect on their life.

Insight-oriented psychotherapy is often mixed with more conventional forms of therapy to provide the best results. For example, during your treatment, you may learn some of the unconscious reasons why you have difficulty maintaining certain relationships. Once those unconscious reasons are brought to the fore, then some cognitive behavioral suggestions could be used to help you improve the way that you communicate as well as improve behavioral issues that you might have.
