The Applause Is Not Only for You

Recently, I spoke with a highly successful CEO who leads quarterly all-company meetings. She is respected, accomplished, and deeply committed to her team. When I asked who opens the meetings, she replied, “I do.”

My response? “You are too important to walk on stage without being introduced.”

This is not about ego. It is about positioning, authority, and audience psychology.

When you begin your own meeting without an introduction, you miss a powerful opportunity to set expectations, build anticipation, and elevate your message before you say a single word. Every moment either adds to or distracts from your message.

A formal introduction or “voice of God” announcement plays three roles:

First, it programs the audience to respond with applause. It changes your emotional state. You begin energized, confident, and in command.

Second, it confirms your authority. Even when everyone knows you, a brief introduction and a reminder of the meeting’s purpose reframes how they listen. Familiarity should never dilute impact.

Third, it signals importance. When the meeting begins with intention, your audience leans in rather than settles in.

One of the most overlooked principles in executive communication is this: your presentation begins before your first word.

Leaders often believe, “It’s my company, my team, my meeting. They know who I am.” Precisely. That is why your presence needs to be elevated rather than casual.

Imagine the difference:
You walk up and say, “Good morning.”
Or…
A Voice of God booms, “Ladies and Gentlemen, please join me in welcoming an industry leader, a dynamic community contributor, and the founder of one of the best places to work in our county. The woman we call Boss…Mary Johnson.”

The room applauds, and you step forward, with purpose and pride.

Same leader. Completely different impact.

If you want your message to be remembered and repeated, own your stage before you ever step on it.

If you are ready to elevate the way you show up in your most important meetings, I would be delighted to help.
