I've been listening to the daily news conferences about the horrific shooting at Brown University. They involve the mayor, governor, campus police chief, Providence police chief, president of Brown, Rhode Island Attorney General, and special agent in charge of the FBI Boston office. They take all kinds of questions from the media people in the audience. They are patient and specific.
The level of questioning is inane at this point, and clearly reporters are looking for nominations for local Emmy awards or work at larger outlets. They are often accusatory, suggesting all of the horror could have somehow been prevented. The demand, “Why don't you know who was in that classroom?!” was met by a calm response from Brown: “It was a voluntary study session, it was not a class, anyone was welcome to join, there was no signup requirement.” One reporter actually said to the Brown president, “You can't identify all the people in that room and YOU'RE the president of brown?!”
People trying to earn credits for being obnoxious don't impress me. Nor do the politicians who keep thanking the other politicians for their help and support to build a few votes, collectively. Their support is their job.
As usual, the media is seeking blame and not cause.
