Why You're Right to Trust Your Gut
"Beware first impressions; they're usually right" said Napoleon's chief counselor Talleyrand. Yet many of us aim to be enlightened, open-minded souls, not giving in to our first impressions. More power to us.... Right?
Possibly wrong. In a study published in ScienceDaily a few months ago, the University of Texas at Austin suggested that observers could accurately judge 9 out of 10 personality traits.
The 10 traits in question were extraversion, openness, agreeableness, conscientiousness, emotional stability, likability, self-esteem, loneliness, religiosity and political orientation.
"We have long known that people jump to conclusions about others on the basis of very little information," said one of the researchers, "but what's striking about these findings is how many of the impressions have a kernel of truth to them, even on the basis of something as simple a single photograph."
