Admittedly, I’m not much of a football fan. I like baseball, basketball, boxing, waterskiing, tennis, golf, and boating/yachting much more. Nonetheless, my dad and I always watched the Super Bowl together, and except for my college years, I don’t think we ever missed watching a Super Bowl Game.
One of my favorite memories was when my dad, blind from cancer would make sure I got to his house on time for the pregame bloopers show.
In retrospect, I think he enjoyed my color commentary and unique adlibs more than the actual show.
The hours would pass as the game would progress with Dad correcting my errors in player’s names and misinterpretations of the plays. Even blind my dad had a great eye.
The same thing would happen at World Series time or for the NBA Championship Series. We never missed a game and we’d stay tuned until the broadcast left the screen.
Sometimes there would be nothing said… and there didn’t have to be.
I know my dad enjoyed watching the games with me, but now that he’s been gone a while and the memories seem as real as the times they were made… I can say now for sure that I enjoyed them even more. I still miss my dad and I think it’s why I watch the Super Bowl at all.
So when the announcer names the players taking the field, it’s
Still George and his son Michael calling the plays.
