Professional Futurists Appoint New Chair

The Association of Professional Futurists (APF), which recognizes the credentials of futurists worldwide, announces it has appointed a new board chair, Dr. Jay Gary, of Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA. Jay comes to APF with two decades of experience in association management, virtual learning and higher education leadership.

"My passion as APF's new Chair will be to showcase our members who are 'working the future,' across government, business, and non-profits," Jay states. APF is led by an international board of 9 futurists from 3 continents, and key volunteers. Plans for 2018 include hosting an annual global gathering, strengthening regional member engagement, and offering a "Pro Dev" webinar series.

Jay Gary is no stranger to the world of foresight, innovation and design. Throughout the '90s, he worked as a "millennial consultant," helping cities and alliances mark their passage into the 21st century. Starting in 2004, he worked for a decade as an associate professor, teaching strategic foresight to graduate students. For the past three years he has worked at Oral Roberts University, creating virtual learning environments that empower emerging leaders through new certificates and degrees.

He has published over 33 academic and professional papers, including a 2017 co-authored piece on "Building Foresight Capacity" which documented APF's "Foresight Competency Model," a 2015 paper on "The Future of Foresight Professionals" which shared results from a global Delphi study on how foresight practice might evolve out to 2030. His PhD research in 2008 helped recalibrate a foresight measure, as summarized in "Foresight Styles Assessment: Testing a new tool for consulting futurists."

Dr. Jay Gary succeeds Dr. Cindy Frewen of Kansas City as APF Chair. Frewen led APF through 7 substantial years. Since 2011, APF grew from 170 members in 17 countries to over 500 members in 41 countries. Other milestones during the Frewen era included diversifying APF membership to 40% female and doubling annual gross revenue. This past year APF hosted 11 events on five continents, including a Brisbane summit on "Blockchain" and a Seattle gathering on "Global Health Futures."
