My wife mistakenly put a bank deposit slip in the mailbox with the mail. The local post office told her to go to the distribution center a few miles away to talk to the supervisor. My wife pointed out that “Joe” down there never returned calls in the past. “Oh, Joe's gone,” they said.

The new supervisor listened to my wife, and told her he'd get his car and follow her to the mailbox and open it. She was astounded. “You'll do that right now?!”

“Of course,” he said. “This is important.”

Everyone in the local posted system hated Joe, and everyone loves the new guy. Why? Because he sees his job at helping other employees and customers, not avoiding them or passing the buck.

It's a shame I have to use a blog post citing this as an exception, but “toxic workplaces” are way overstated. It's about employees who care or don't care, and don't try to blame the system or the boss for not simply doing their job.
