Yesterday's Tomorrow: Your Financial Secret Weapon

Yesterday's Tomorrow: Your Financial Secret Weapon
We all feel the impact of our finances and know it’s important to save. Yet despite that, many of us struggle with feeling overwhelmed or motivated to make financial plans or goals. The saving situation for us millennials (i.e. 25-34 year olds) is challenging: we are facing high levels of student loan debt compared to previous generations and a tight job market in a recovering economy. That said, these challenges make it even more imperative that we don’t get left behind when it comes to financial literacy. Thankfully our “Feed the Pig” campaign is here to empower, motivate, and help you develop the skills to make financial plans that work for your circumstances.
The campaign, sponsored by the AICPA (the American Institute of Certified Professional Accountants), has been reaching young professionals for over ten years – meeting people where they are and providing them with tools to help them succeed. As a part of that trajectory and mission, we partnered with Games for Change to hold a game design challenge and worked with Crafter.life Studios to develop the winning game idea: Yesterday’s Tomorrow: Your Financial Adventure.
Yesterday’s Tomorrow is a narrative-based digital game that prompts you to consider how decisions you make in the here and now can impact you later in life. You create the photo album of your life by choosing and playing through snapshots that represent various stories from your teenage years to retirement, in a “choose your own adventure” fashion. Whether you decide to buy a car, adopt a pet, buy a home, or hang out at the mall, you can be sure that your choices matter and will impact your relationships, health, education, career, and of course, your finances.
Our hope is that while you’re having fun playing Yesterday’s Tomorrow, you’ll also be developing a new relationship with your finances. By building out the photo album of your life story, carefully balancing your stats to live the life you want, you’ll learn to roll with the punches, to gain a sense of empowerment over your long term goals, and leave feeling motivated to make a financial plan (or two or three!). Play the game and let us know what you think – How did you fare?
