Many people feel they are in turbulent times in their organizations. It is likely to get more turbulent in the next couple of years. It has happened before. There is wisdom from the past that is worthy of remembering.

Management turbulance

One of my favorites is Peter Drucker. He is known as the father of modern management. He introduced many management concepts that have been embraced by corporations around the world.

He is known for recognizing the humanity in organizations and the importance of honoring that humanity. He believed leadership at all levels provided an important role for the organization and for society. Some of his quotes:

“Only three things happen naturally in organizations: friction, confusion, and underperformance. Everything else requires leadership.”

“The greatest danger in times of turbulence is not the turbulence; it is to act with yesterday’s logic.”

If you tap into Drucker’s wisdom, what does that mean to you? Recognizing that friction, confusion and underperformance are a natural part of an organization – we can choose to recognize it, avoid the frustration, and focus on the leadership we need to exert to make it better.
If we are in turbulent times, we need to toss overboard the old logic that no longer applies and address the change with an open mind. Drucker also said:

“The only skill that is important in the 21st century is the skill to learn new skills. Everything else will become obsolete over time.”

It is essential to be committed to learning the new skills. Learning must not become lost in being too busy. The tools are plentiful today. Audio books allow you to “read” while you exercise or commute. Videos are available on most topics. They are efficient and effective way to learn. There are many other topics also. If you want to improve your executive presence you can use our ChangeMastersAcademy.com for great videos.

Making the choice to read blogs that are relevant to you are a quick way to get new information and stimulate thoughts. Learning to be nimble and open to new ideas is your best way to thrive in turbulent times. One closing Drucker quote:

“The best way to predict your future is to create it.”
