June Hot Car - 2018 BMW 8 Series

From Photographer Matt Wetzel…

While it has only been 2 years since we last featured a BMW here in our “Hot Car of the Month” article, it has been a whopping 18 years since we last saw a car roll out of BMW’s factory in Munich wearing the esteemed “8 Series” moniker. Last appearing on the 1989-1999 840Ci, 850i, 850Ci, and 850CSi variants, this was BMW’s pinnacle of grand touring, and was placed about their critically acclaimed 6 series.

Set to sweep us off our feet later this year, the upcoming 840i, 850i, and subsequent M division M8 will be filling not only a gap left by the recently discontinued 6 series coupe, but will also had a large luxury coupe to BMW’s already diverse line up. Competing with the likes of the Mercedes Benz S Class coupe, upcoming Audi A9, and even models from Bentley and Aston Martin, the new 8 series will have its work cut out for it in a segment dominated by technology, luxury features, and tire shredding power.

Taking what BMW learned from their last dabble in large luxury coupes, this new car will be based on the newly released 5 series platform which means gains in almost all categories for performance, efficiency, and weight savings of over 220lbs. BMW is taking a big step forward by deciding to offer the tried and true 3.0L straight six and 4.4L V8 rather than the underpowered 5.0L V12 that dogged the previous generation. These engines choices deliver 340 and 462 horse power respectively which for the standard driver will me more than ample to float around town, and cruise along the highway. Power will be put to the ground via the rear wheels as standard on the 840i, with optional all-wheel drive while the V8 siblings will come in all-wheel drive only.

Not many details have surfaced regarding technology however with rivals offering selective self-driving technology, virtual displays and controls, as well as hybrid alternatives we expect that BMW will deliver similar offerings. While pricing isn’t announced, comparing this model to others in the segment you can expect prices to start at or above the $100,000 mark when the car officially launches in a few months time.
