Michael Levine, America's leading media expert called Dr. Anthony Fauci's appearance before Congress "a shocking and embarrassing disaster" that inflicted irreparable damage on a public career spanning more than four decades.

"Dr. Fauci did not merely have a difficult afternoon," Levine said. "He presided over the televised demolition of his own credibility."

Fauci's repeated invocation of the Fifth Amendment transformed what could have been an opportunity for clarification into a spectacle of evasion, Levine argued. His refusal to answer lawmakers' questions created a devastating public impression—regardless of the legal strategy behind it.

"When he appeared ready to take the Fifth if someone asked him the color of his tie, I thought: This guy is done," Levine said. "That is obviously rhetorical, but it captures the absurdity of the moment. A man who spent years lecturing America suddenly behaved as though nearly every answer carried criminal peril."

According to Levine, public reputation is constructed slowly but can collapse with breathtaking speed.

"Fauci spent more than 40 years building authority, visibility, and institutional prestige," Levine said. "He then managed to place all of it into a woodchipper in a single afternoon."

Levine emphasized that invoking the Fifth Amendment is a constitutional right and not proof of guilt. But in the unforgiving arena of public opinion, he said, perception frequently overwhelms legal nuance.

"Credibility requires candor," Levine concluded. "When the questions arrive, and the answers disappear, trust usually follows them out the door."
