At Dunkin' Donuts my dogs bark into the speaker and when we get to the window the employees have biscuits ready for them. At a local coffee shop, most of the help doesn't even greet me or say “thank you” when I pay, and they often got the order wrong—before I stopped going there.

Don't hire available people, hire good people, by giving them some leeway and recognition. Money is not a motivator. Give an unhappy or toxic employee more money and you have a wealthier unhappy or toxic employee.
