There's good news and bad news for dentists. The good news is, contrary to popular belief, dentists are not in the occupation at the highest risk for depression and thoughts of suicide. The bad news is, they are generally 5th or 6th, depending on which survey you read. The number one at risk occupation is construction (followed by fishermen, farmers and forestry workers). Why construction? It's male dominated, and almost 8 out of 10 suicides in the US are men age 45 to 54. It's a occupation subject to weather and more importantly, subject to the condition of the economy. What can be done about it? Good question.
