My guide will take you through every step of starting with affiliate marketing, from selecting the right programs to creating high-converting content and driving traffic. Whether you’re a seasoned blogger or just starting, this post will provide actionable tips to help you succeed.

What is Affiliate Marketing?

How Affiliate Marketing Works
Source

Affiliate marketing is a type of marketing that utilizes affiliate links to help generate affiliate income for both an influencer and a brand. Affiliate links are given to participants of affiliate marketing programs, and those links are used to generate affiliate income when followers, email list recipients, and others click on links and purchase physical or digital products. Successful affiliates can also use affiliate codes to support sales.

Because making money with affiliate marketing requires the use of links or codes given to an affiliate partner, blogging is an excellent form of digital marketing from which to drive affiliate sales.

If you are looking to break your way into the affiliate marketing industry, there are several important terms to keep in mind. The most important terms to consider include:

  • Affiliate networks. An affiliate network is an affiliate niche platform designed specifically to connect content creators and brands. A common one is Amazon Affiliate, though there are countless others from which to choose.
  • Commissions. Affiliate commissions are the result of affiliate sales, ultimately becoming cash in the affiliate’s pocket.
  • Referral tracking. Referral tracking is used to identify the success of an affiliate marketing journey, specifically with regard to the income generated by the campaign.

How to Get Started with Affiliate Marketing on Your Blog

Before you embark on your affiliate marketing journey, make sure you choose a blog niche that effectively aligns with available affiliate marketing opportunities. To be a successful affiliate, you cannot simply post links to products that do not relate to your niche. To truly make money with affiliate marketing, you must select a blog niche that will work well with your preferred affiliate marketing strategy.

From there, you can begin to research different affiliate programs and networks. Amazon Associates is a common way to make money with affiliate marketing, as Amazon has become a ubiquitous feature in ecommerce. ShareASale is another affiliate platform that can prove useful as a way to make money from affiliate marketing.

Once you have completed research, you can get on the email list of your preferred brands and sign up for any affiliate programs that fit in your niche. Affiliate sales require regular clicks on your links to products, so it will not serve you if you try to use a wide range of links rather than links related to your specific niche.

The next step in your affiliate marketing journey comes in the form of actually utilizing your affiliate links and generating affiliate sales. As you create your blog content–or go back to edit existing posts, boost affiliate sales by integrating links into your blog content naturally. Like keyword stuffing, roping in outlandish products rather than focusing on relevant products can actually harm your likelihood of seeing affiliate success.

Understanding how to engage in online marketing effectively means honing in on relevant products. Many an online business relies on this form of marketing to get their names out and to effectively sell a wide range of products. Consider the travel influencer who posts blogs about their traveling experiences, and posts an affiliate link to a suitcase set or reusable water bottle. Affiliate marketers in the health and wellness industry might link to a supplement brand they are using, or exercise equipment.

Tips for Choosing the Right Affiliate Programs

Choosing the Best Affiliate Marketing Program

Affiliate programs have become increasingly common, and affiliate marketers are similarly common features in the affiliate marketplace. That being said, however, not every online business will easily find its ideal marketing partner, and affiliate marketing beginners need not take on the first program they come across. Instead, try to focus on several important considerations, including relevance, commission rates, product quality and credibility, and payout thresholds and affiliate program terms.

Opt for an affiliate marketplace that partners you with relevant products. Different blog niches will coalesce well with different products, so look for an affiliate marketing business that has multiple products or services within its program.

Commission rates are another important consideration. While you can create awesome content for a range of items, if your affiliate offers do not produce a competitive rate, you may not see a great return on your investment of time and energy. Opt for an affiliate marketing business or program that pays its affiliates well.

Whether you are exclusively developing blog content or producing blog and video content, make sure you are creating content that provides affiliate links to high-quality products and credible businesses. An initially high conversion rate is nothing when your reliability and credibility are negatively impacted by links to affiliate products or companies that are unreliable or of poor quality.

Not all affiliate offers follow the same pattern or terms. Some have payout thresholds that are extremely high, making it difficult to earn and subsequently receive your money. Some have terms that may not work well with your goals or professional boundaries. Identify the rate of payout you need to see with your affiliate partners, and go over all of the terms in any contract you might sign to make sure they benefit both you and the company in question.

Although there are countless affiliate programs currently available, affiliate marketing beginners may feel more comfortable opting for tried-and-true options, including:

  • Amazon Associates
  • CJ Affiliate (Commission Junction)
  • Rakuten Advertising
  • AWIN / ShareASale
  • Impact

Each of these programs can be used to develop awesome content and see a high conversion rate. Making money from affiliate marketing may also prove easier when the program is a long-established and frequently-used one.

Content Types

Optimization Tips

When you are developing your blog posts, make sure you are placing some focus on your headlines, and make them compelling and click-worthy. Investigational keywords can help give headlines a punch, and can be a great place to start.

Visuals are a must for effective optimization. Placing product images can also help drive traffic from SEO, because Google Analytics favors posts and pages that have high quality images. Using visuals, even if those visuals are infographics or comparison tables can help drive more consistent traffic and optimize your posts.

One of the key steps of optimizing is placing your focus on your readers’ problems, and meeting their needs. Catchy titles can help capture the attention of your audience, and let them know that you can answer their pressing questions.

As you write, do not create content primarily to drive your conversion rate or to create a catchy SEO title. Ultimately, a nice title is great, but to extend your blog past a couple months, and to curate longevity, write for trust and transparency in order to bring in consistent traffic and maintain audience credibility.

Driving Traffic to Your Affiliate Blog Posts

Driving traffic to the posts you find in typical affiliate programs involves a few key components, including SEO optimization, social media promotion, email marketing, guest blogging, and partnerships.

Search engine optimization is one of the most straightforward ways to improve traffic to your individual affiliate programs. Because SEO helps keep your content current and helps you rank more highly in search, you can more effectively see a bump up in your organic search traffic. Building your affiliate content around keywords is a great first approach to improving SEO.

Using your affiliate dashboard to promote your content is another great way to drive traffic to your blog posts. Whether you opt for a standard image post or you generate video content, use your social platforms to your advantage and deliver step by step directions to navigate to your affiliate links and subsequently make money with affiliate marketing.

Getting a solid email address list is another valuable tool in your toolkit. Whether you generate a monthly newsletter, or you link to new blog posts, or compile information within your niche once or twice per week, take advantage of any email address you may have and support affiliate sales through email, while driving traffic to any blog or video content you may have. By delivering email marketing campaigns, you can nurture your subscribers with interesting, valuable content.

Guest blogging can help you develop internal links to link back to your blog posts and drive traffic via direct links. From posting directly with an online retailer you are working with, to working alongside another affiliate marketer or someone in your niche, you can drive plenty of traffic through guest blogging. Partnerships can achieve the same end, providing a medium for internal links and increasing the dollars per month your affiliate program is bringing in.

Common Mistakes to Avoid in Blogging Affiliate Marketing

Common Affiliate Marketing Mistakes You Must Avoid
Source

It can be tempting to overload your blog content with broad keywords and a slew of affiliate links, but this can make it difficult to make money with affiliate marketing by creating spammy impressions. Effective affiliate program managers link to products only when and where it is appropriate to do so and do not overuse affiliate links in a single blog post.

Some beginner affiliates also make the mistake of promoting low-quality or irrelevant products that unintentionally alienate your audience and undermine your message. Focus on finding notable reviews for products or brands before taking on those items or partnerships.

Whether you are hosting a lifestyle blog, a travel blog, or a simple, nice blog reminiscing about years gone by, disclosure is essential. Any content is considered weak content if you do not include an affiliate disclaimer within the body of your blog. From promoting a single product to creating content to promote a bunch of affiliate products, you have to let your audience know that the contents in blog posts are designed with an affiliate partnership in mind. Failing to disclose any affiliate relationships means failure to comply with FTC guidelines and potential legal trouble.

Tracking and Optimizing Affiliate Performance

Tracking and Analyzing Affiliate Link Performance

Now that we have covered contents for blog posts and the value of creating a helpful blog for your audience, let’s move on to how to measure how your keywords for blogs are performing, and how to evaluate the conversion rate you are seeing across your affiliate programs.

Tools for Tracking

Tracking the success of your affiliate links often starts with the right suite of tools to fit your needs. These tools can be simple or complex, and can be found in a suite of existing tools you use, or can be found independent of your existing management systems. To track your affiliate blogs, consider utilizing the following tools:

  • Google Analytics. Google Analytics provides a tracking page to evaluate performance and clicks and is often the preferred choice for the newbie blogger.
  • Pretty Links. Pretty links offers shortening and tracking affiliate URLs for WordPress websites and is a great affiliate link management plugin for anyone using WP engine as a hosting provider or a WordPress site. There are also some alternatives to Pretty Links that you might want to consider, such as the one I use, URL Shortener Pro.
  • Affiliate network dashboards. Your affiliate dashboard will likely provide tools for monitoring commissions and conversions. Commission Junction is one option for bloggers, though there are others to help evaluate whether you are making money with affiliate marketing or you need to make some adjustments to your affiliate strategy.

Optimization Tips

Making money with affiliate marketing can be wonderful, but it can also take some trial and error before you hit your stride. I have several strategies I encourage newbie affiliates to utilize to make sure their marketing channels and bogs are performing well. These optimization tips include:

  • Identifying underperforming content and tweaking affiliate placements. By using a tool like Google Analytics, you can determine which affiliates are underperforming, and make changes. This is a great time to evaluate your content for some of the biggest mistakes bloggers make, which I identified above.
  • Developing A/B tests to evaluate calls-to-action (CTAs) and content formats. A/B testing helps you evaluate everything in your affiliate marketing funnel, from your blog to your YouTube channel. Using A/B testing, you can identify what works and what doesn’t, and change your content accordingly.
  • Using data to refine content strategies for maximum ROI. Return on investment is an essential consideration as you evaluate your hosting programs, your contents for blog posts, and even your affiliate partnerships. If you consistently find that one post or one affiliate underperforms, you can refine your content strategies to streamline your successes and apply what you have learned for your specific niche for affiliate marketing to see greater success.
