When I first went to Hong Kong in the 70s in December, I was astounded by the Christmas lights, festivity, and celebration. About 15% of the population is Christian, although whether “practicing” or not no one knows. (I think you’re always “practicing” religion, one never becomes a professional.) I’ve been there a dozen times, but only once since the Chinese takeover, and don’t believe anyone who tells you it’s the same as it was before.
Christmas has become a secular time of good cheer. It’s a celebratory time for Christians, (Easter is the most sacred and religious of the holy days). It’s also a celebratory time for Jews, honoring their victory and ensuing freedom after the Maccabean Revolt. The Menorah lights represent a triumph over darkness in the celebration of Hanukah.
And of course, December 25 is not Christ’s actual birth date, but was chosen because it was a significant date to co-opt: pagan holidays had claimed it, it was the Roman winter solstice (at my doorstep as I write this), the date of John the Baptist’s birth, and so on. (Jesus was most probably born between 6 and 4 BC—nobody’s sure exactly when.)
No matter what your religion, or absence of religion, I hope that these are times that lead to happiness, family, feasting, and love. The Christmas Song “…and every mother’s child is going to spy, to see if reindeer really know how to fly,” is symbolic of a generalized good cheer. Anyone who tries to dissuade children from a Merry Christmas and Santa is probably also giving away the ends of books and movies and taking the largest helpings of dessert—a grinch.
Thus, please accept our best wishes with that intent, meaning to insult no one and accepting everyone, when we say to you, “Merry Christmas,” and please accept this very sincere sentiment from Maria and me for love, health, peace, and prosperity.
