Putting yourself out there to meet marriage-minded singles can seem like a lot of work. Dating people you know only from online dating or a phone conversation can be overwhelming. But just remember, you are able to exert all this effort because you believe it’s going to work: that before long you are going to meet that special someone face to face. I’m here to tell you, yes, it does happen. But how can you tell when it is happening to you? What are the signs of true love?

Man with his arm around is date after giving her flowers as a gesture of his true love.

There are signs that a relationship has lasting value. There is more to it than simply “being in love.” You are committing yourself to a lifelong relationship, so you will want to think about where you will be in ten years, in twenty, in fifty. Think about how you feel about your partner now and imagine how you might feel when you are taking the grandchildren to Disney World thirty years from now or taking that trip to Africa 5 years from now with your true love.

Six Signs That You’ve Found The Right One!

  1. There is a feeling of “home.”

The first of the signs of true love is all about a level of comfort. The person you’re dating feels so naturally right that it seems pre-ordained. You just know that this person is the one. It’s like you have known each other your whole life because it’s so easy to talk to one another. You feel a familiarity with them. You can be sitting on the beach with nothing else going on, but just being together is enough.
  2. There is a flow.

The relationship has an ease to it. Time just flies when you’re with the right person. Yes, relationships take work, but this is joyous work. The concept of flow is true for both in and out of the bedroom!

For instance, at dinner in a cute Italian restaurant instead of ordering two entrées, you order two appetizers and one entrée to share your choices. You have a spirited discussion about which wine to order. He wins, but you’re surprised that you adore his choice. Without a big effort, things just move along.

  3. You can laugh together and have fun.

You enjoy each other’s jokes. You may not have exactly the same humor, but you at least crack a smile. Caught in a traffic jam, he imitates the furious drivers around him, mimicking their accents and exaggerating their personalities until you’re laughing so hard the tears are running down your cheeks.

On our second date, my husband and I both blew straw wrappings at each other — like kids! It’s okay to be silly with the right person.

The ability to joyfully play together is an essential sign of true love.

  4. You are each other’s best friend.

There is a sense of trust and loyalty. You know your partner will be there for you through thick and thin. Your partner can be counted on to give you the benefit of the doubt when others find fault with you. You want to share everything with them — the good stuff and the bad stuff.

If the boss doesn’t appreciate her work, you’re the one who encourages her to apply for a transfer and assures her that others will see her strengths — just as you do.

  5. You are passionately fond of one another.

You arrive home from the airport after midnight, exhausted. He has been waiting up, leaps to the door, and throws his arms around you. You know he’s genuinely pleased you’re back. He’s not just being nice, he really wants to be right next to you because he’s missed you so much the past three days.
  6. You both act in a “we” way rather than a “me” way.

She loves scuba diving and you love hiking. Instead of heading for either the Caribbean for her or the Appalachian Trail for you, you research options until you find that resort in Costa Rica where she can dive and you can hike. Even more important, the resort has golf facilities you can enjoy together.

Whether for long or short-term goals, you make decisions that benefit the relationship instead of only the individual. You share life goals and work towards them together. You care about how your actions affect the other person. Your willingness to work to keep your partnership going is a sign of true love.

These signs can help you know that he or she is the one.  I’m sure you can add some signs of your own to this list.  Most of my clients know they’ve met the one within 3 to 6 dates!  That’s after they’ve done the deep coaching work to understand who’d be a good partner and what they need to be happy in a relationship.

I suggest you keep these 6 signs of true handy so you can recognize the right partner when he or she shows up!
