TheBecky Bugger E-letter to Me

FromHer E-Marketing Agency

As readers know, I spent60 years in Direct Mail Marketing—as an agency copywriter, designer and bookclub director. Later in my checkered career I became a freelancer, morphed intoa self-publisher (WHO’S MAILING WHAT! Newsletter & Archive Service) andeditor, publisher of Target Marketing magazine.

Those of us that practicedthe science and art of direct mail have the complex rules of engagementhard-wired into our DNA—the daunting arithmetic that all comes down to CPOcost-per-order), CPM (cost-per-thousand of lists) and PPPI (cost of paper, printing, postage and inserting).

And ultimately knowing howto test small, making confirming tests and—if the numbers are right—rolling outto reap obscene profits.

The ultimate beauty ofdirect mail is the glorious secrecy. You could drop a wee 5,000-piece testmailing and nobody could pick up on what you are doing until you blitzed the countrycausing your competitors to eat your dust.

Enter the Internet in themid-1980s. It grew exponentially and became the Wild West of the advertisingbusiness. Read about  Yekutiel Sherman whoinvented the Selfie-stick. It was stolen out from under him by Chinese pirates whosold his Selfie-sticks all over the world while he was still putting together hisfinancial plan.

By the time the 1990s arrived,  a gazillion hotshot kids — with zero experiencein marketing and design — took over and set the protocols. These kids said tous geezers:

“This is the new medium and the new paradigm.Your old rules are deader than Kelsey’s nuts. We make the rules now. So, take ahike, buster.

Dear Rebecca Bugger,

Thank you for your alerting me about my GoogleSuspension.

This is very upsetting.

I have been using Google for many years andnever had a problem.

Could you kindly explain what my suspendedGoogle account means and how you can help me make things right?

Ms. Bugger never replied.

Takeaways to Consider

"According to a 2008 study by researchers at theUniversity of California, Berkeley and UC, San Diego, spammers get aresponse just once for every 12.5 million emails they send — a responserate of 0.000008%. Despite that, though, spammers are still ableto turn a profit." —sitepoint.com

The Becky Bugger letter was spam.  Horse hockey. BS. A colossal waste of time. Google did not cancelmy account.

• Her threat of a canceled account was apathetic attention-getter.

• I love Google. Google owns YouTube—the world’sgreatest collection of living entertainment, history and information everassembled on Planet Earth! All of it FREE!

• God, how I love YouTube! It's amazing!

• Thanks to Google, I’m on YouTube all thetime. During the dismal months of lockdown and isolation, I have spent hours onYouTube traveling the world. My favorite: the magnificent BBC Great TrainJourneys starring the debonair, articulate, charming Michael Portillo. You'll love it, too!

• Thanks to Google I was able to create mybook, Bawdy Jokes & Patter Songs. It contains seven hours of grandlive entertainment and fun including 112 patter song performances by the mostbeloved performers of the past hundred years. (All this for a paltry $2.99 price for the ebook!)

• “I can recommendthis to individuals who are looking for a way to pass the time while reading, listening, and learning about the humorous history of risqué jokes and songs. My rating is fourout of four stars becauseof the unique format, extensive information, and almost flawless editing. It isobvious that Denny Hatch is serious about brightening the lives of peopleaffected by these trying times.”

At age 15, Denny Hatch—as a lowly apprentice—wrote his first news release for a Connecticut summer theater. To his astonishment it ran verbatim in The Middletown Press. He was instantly hooked on writing. After a two-year stint in the U.S. Army (1958-60), Denny had nine jobs in his first 12 years in business. He was fired from five of them and went on to save two businesses and start three others. One of his businesses—WHO’S MAILING WHAT! newsletterand archive service founded in 1984—revolutionized the science of how to measure the success of competitors’ direct mail. In the past 55 yearshe has been a book club director, magazine publisher, advertising copywriter/designer, editor, journalist and marketing consultant. He is the author of four published novels and seven books on business and marketing.
