90 Day Challenge

Fall arrived about 10 days ago, but with the arrival of October, it psychologically seems to be more in tune with the season. Depending on how you look at your calendar, fall can range from a “back to school” vibe to the jolt that there are only 90 remaining until the end of the year.

As this year continues to be unlike any we’ve ever experienced, I challenge you to think about what you’d like to accomplish between now and the end of the year and then commit to action.

One great way to do this is to create a 90-day challenge. Identify what you’re wiling to do every day for the next 90 days. If you start this today, 90 days will fall on December 31, creating a nice punctuation point for the year.

Choose something that will move you forward. It could be a daily reading or meditation. You could commit to being in touch with one current or former client a day. Or you can select something fitness related where the daily discipline creates one habit that can morph into new ongoing behaviors.

In making your commitment, make sure you’re not taking on too much. If this is your first time doing a multiple month daily challenge, think through what you realistically can commit too. One friend, for example, decided to run one mile a day regardless of the weather. She has an entire route planned through her apartment hallways for those bad weather days.

Track what you commit to. When you keep score, there is something very satisfying that you will experience as you check off the days. If you feel inspired, you may even want to record a comment of what you learned or how the activity felt that day.

Aside from all of these features, one of the biggest benefits to doing such a challenge is that it will build your mental stamina and get you through some of the challenging days ahead that we’re likely to face as the pandemic drags on. Rather than feeling low energy during the holidays, for example, you can look the fruits of your progress with pride.
