Once we scorn success and excellence, and do away with valedictorians, athletic competition winners, awards for best sales people, publishing philanthropic giving, and similar measures of achievement, we have created a mediocre society that craves blandness and a pseudo “equality.” Schools are eliminating honors programs. Some non-profits have stopped publishing what different people contribute financially and just list them alphabetically.
This isn’t equality, it’s mediocrity.
I’ve belonged to associations which seem to have an unspoken mission of making
every member as successful as its least successful member. In other words, we don’t want any standouts acknowledged as it might depress everyone else who isn’t as good (rather than motivate them to be better). Do you belong to these outfits? If so, get out.
Ironically, the top movie these days in Top Gun
Maverick. not exactly about an average guy or average performance. Cognitive dissonance, anyone?
My favorite of all the books I’ve written after
Million Dollar Consulting is
Million Dollar Maverick.
