Jon and Kate (of
Jon & Kate Plus 8 fame) will be making a big announcement next week.
Everyone is speculating about what that announcement will be.
Thursday, RadarOnline.com cited an unnamed source as saying the announcement is that Jon and Kate are filing for divorce. Rumor has it that both parties have already ?lawyered up.?
For weeks on end, dual allegations of infidelity have made these two pseudo-celebrities objects of intense interest. Each one is rumored to be having an affair ? Jon with 23-year-old schoolteacher, Deanna Hummel; Kate with Steve Nield, the family's bodyguard.
The speculation about whether or not these rumors are true made their TV reality show,
Jon & Kate Plus 8, the most watched cable TV show this year, with an estimated 9.8 million viewers for the season?s premiere last month.
But why are so many people interested in the marital problems of Jon and Kate?
Who cares what happens to them and why?
Why All the Interest in Jon and Kate? Infidelity expert Ruth Houston explains why we?re so interested in the fate of Jon and Kate.
According to Ruth Houston, the founder of
www.InfidelityAdvice.com and the author of
"Is He Cheating on You?? 829 Telltale Signs, it?s because of the public?s ?insatiable appetite for all things infidelity.?
Houston, a New York infidelity expert who is frequently called on by the media to comment on celebrity infidelity, high profile infidelity court cases, and infidelity breaking news, says, ?Infidelity has become the new spectator sport. When someone in the public eye cheats on his or her mate, or is rumored to be having an affair, the public wants to know every salacious detail and they want to watch as the drama unfolds.?
Houston continues, ?People have voracious appetites for anything that deals with infidelity, cheating spouses, or extramarital affairs ? especially if celebrities, sports figures, politicians or the rich and famous are involved.?
Why Infidelity Has Widespread Appeal Houston explains why infidelity has such strong appeal. ?For one thing, infidelity has become so widespread, that most people can relate to it in some way. Nearly everyone has at least one friend, relative, or co-worker who is cheating, or has been cheated on. An overwhelming majority have been on the receiving end of infidelity themselves. Infidelity in one form or another (physical, emotional, online, female, same-sex, workplace) affects an estimated 80% of all marriages and committed relationships today.?
A
USA Today/Gallup poll reported that 54% of Americans said they knew someone who had a cheating spouse.
Houston comments, ?If you factor in unmarried people in committed relationships who are cheating on their mates, that percentage is even higher. ?
No One is Immune to Infidelity Houston says another reason the public is so interested in infidelity is that it has no boundaries. It?s an issue that affects everyone, regardless of race, religion, social status, age, income level, or educational background.
Houston continues, ?People are intensely curious about how the other half lives. They either gloat over, or take comfort in the fact that the marriages of others, especially the rich and famous, are not immune to extramarital affairs. It can happen to anyone, at any time.?
Valuable Lessons to Be Learned Infidelity is a recurring theme in most forms of entertainment.
Houston observes, ?Apart from the entertainment value, there are lessons to be learned from other people?s experiences with infidelity. People who are struggling with issues of infidelity are seeking information, answers, solutions, advice that they can apply to their own personal situations.?
Says Houston, ?Public accounts of infidelity hold something for everyone ? the cheater, the infidelity victim, the Other Woman/ Other Man, and all the friends, co-workers and family members who know of, or who are affected by the affair. People are interested in learning how others have handled similar situations.?
Is It Too Late for Jon and Kate? But back to
Jon and Kate Plus 8. Houston wonders aloud, ? Did TLC miss an opportunity to keep this couple in the limelight by bringing in a marriage and family counselor to help Jon and Kate get their marriage back on track? If the big announcement next Monday is that they are getting a divorce, then it?s already too late for Jon and Kate.?
Go or Stay? When Should You Give a Cheater a Second Chance? Have Jon and Kate cheated on each other? What should a couple do if one spouse has had an extramarital affair? Should they stay together for the sake of the children? Or should they get a divorce? A great deal depends on the circumstances of the infidelity, and the attitude of the spouse who had the affair.
Houston?s
Go or Stay Tip Sheet covers some of the factors that should be considered when trying to decide whether or not to leave a cheating spouse, or stay and give the cheater a second chance. For a FREE copy of the
