Do you feel like your boss or board really gives a damn about you? Are you showing your team you really give a damn about them?

This week the Chartered Institute of Public Relations Interviewed me about Why You Really Need To Give a Damn About Your Employees.

Mark Essayian, president of KME Systemsgives a damn about his customers and he uses that tag line in his conversations on his website and lives it every day. I featured Mark in my new book Rapid Growth, Done Right.

The reason he uses such a direct explanation is that he really does care. When he was articulating his core values, he got lost in the doublespeak of marketing and was concerned he would sound like an idiot and it would not represent him or how much he cares about his customers. He told me: “You know what? We give a damn. That is what is going on our website because it is true, despite some people telling me I couldn’t say something so blunt. I reminded them it was my company and I can get away with it, running a business in Southern California, because it truly reflects how I feel about my customers and employees. Have I lost a customer or a prospect over it? Maybe, but I view it as self-selecting. They’re not going to be a good fit for us.” Sometimes you have to make sure your intent doesn’t get lost in translation and it captures the essence of what you want to get across. Mark backs it up with how he supports his customers: “It doesn’t matter who I talk to. I can quickly explain what my company does: we provide IT services and we give a damn. If your phone system is down, it’s like my own phone doesn’t work. If your email is down, it’s like my company email is broken. If you have a business problem, I have a business problem, because I give a damn.”

In my interview with the Chartered Institute of Public Relations I gave three ways you can show you give a damn about your employees:

  • Know them

  • Keep talking even if you have no news

  • Ask what they need from you

You can read the details here.

How can you show your team you really care today?

Dedicated to growing your business,

Val
