Kathryn Troutman, Baltimore, MD – June 6, 2022 | The Biden-Harris Administration has made a historic announcement. The launch of their White House Internship Program, to take place this Fall, will include pay for the first time in recent history. ($750 per week) The funds will come from bipartisan legislation passed earlier this year. The goal of including pay is to open up opportunities to a wider range of applicants. The White House is recognizing that some talented students and others found unpaid internships to be too much of a financial burden to pursue.

“Opening doors of opportunity, guaranteeing some more fairness and justice ? that’s the essence of America,” said President Joe Biden.

OPENING AND CLOSING DATES
Applications will start to be accepted today, Monday, June 6, and Friday, June 24, will be the closing date. “Because the applications will be reviewed right away, I recommend you apply as soon as possible,” noted Federal jobs expert Kathryn Troutman. “The application includes a one-page resume, in which you need to cover education, work experience, activities, and service experience relevant to the internship.”

START APPLYING HERE – THE WHITE HOUSE INTERNSHIP PORTAL
I actually applied for the White House Internship this morning. It took me 90 minutes. There were 4 surprise narratives to write. They weren’t long, but they were surprises. I wrote them on the spot. They were about why I wanted to work in Public Service with the Biden-Harris Administration. They weren’t long. If you are seriously interested in the internship, you can write these easily – Kathryn Troutman

2 LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION (YOU CAN REQUEST THEM AFTER YOU APPLY FOR THE INTERNSHIP)
Internship-seekers must also supply 2 Letters of Recommendation, written by anyone who can address their character and commitment to public service. The Letters and Resume will be submitted through the Application Portal during the application period.
Notification of selection will be made the week of August 8.

WHO CAN APPLY:
To apply, you must be at least 18 years old before the first day of the program, Monday, September 12 (the internship ends on Friday, December 16). You must also match at least one of the following criteria:

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited undergraduate or graduate degree program at a college, community college, or university (two-year to four-year institution)
  • Graduated from an accredited undergraduate or graduate program at a college, community college, or university (two-year to four-year institution) no more than two years prior to the first day of the internship program
  • A veteran of the United States Armed Forces who possesses a high school diploma or its equivalent and has served on active duty, for any length of time, no more than two years prior to the first day of the program

“Note that Veterans are eligible to apply without college in their background,” Troutman pointed out.

ONE 500 WORD ESSAY ABOUT WHY YOU WANT TO WORK FOR BIDEN-HARRIS ADMINISTRATION
The White House Internship Program is looking for candidates with a demonstrated interest in public service as well as a commitment to the values of the Biden-Harris administration. “These qualifications can be demonstrated in your resume through school papers, projects or courses, extracurricular activities and previous experience during an internship or work,” Troutman said.

THE RESUME IS ONE-PAGE
The application requires a one-page resume to include everything. That was surprising. But they have a separate application page for specific skills. That was a good list.

YOU CAN SELECT 5 OFFICES AT THE WHITE HOUSE
Over 20 departments that support the Biden-Harris administration will be taking interns. These range from the White House Press Office, to the Office of Legislative Affairs, to the Office of the First Lady. You will be able to rank your preferred departments during the application process. To see all the departments as well as what they do, go here. Placement in a particular department is not guaranteed.
Internship duties will vary per your department. Work can include research, handling incoming inquiries, being at meetings, writing memos and serving as staff at events.

THE PAY
The amount of pay will be $750 a week. This stipend will be paid in two parts: (1) at or around the beginning of the internship period and (2) after intern successfully completes their internship. If the internship is not completed (because of being terminated or voluntarily leaving), moneys paid equal to incomplete time will have to be repaid.

IN-PERSON AT THE WHITE HOUSE, NOT REMOTE
The White House Fall Internships require in-person attendance, and will not be virtual. COVID-19 vaccinations are a must, and those accepted will follow White House COVID-19 protocols.

EXCELLENT PUBLIC SERVICE OPPORTUNITY TO WORK AT THE WHITE HOUSE
“This is a wonderful opportunity for students, recent grads and veterans to contribute to America,” said Troutman. “It could be an important first entry to a great career of public service within the Federal government.”
