One of the biggest mistakes I see “networkers” make is that they build and feed their networks expecting a return.
This is a quick way to make your networking efforts fail. Not only will you be disappointed, but you will most likely come across in a way that your contacts may see or feel as insincere or less than trustworthy.
It’s just like giving a gift. When you give a gift, it is (or should be) because you want to give the gift. To make someone happy. To appreciate an effort. To honor an achievement. Unfortunately, some people expect reciprocation when they give gifts. Again – not so wise.
In building your business and personal networks, the mindset that truly works is that you unselfishly feed your network contacts. You help them. You give referrals. You connect them with others.
You do it without ANY expectation of a return.
And then, when you least expect it, your network will “feed” you. Just… not on your timeline, not when you want it to, not something to look for.
