When you are not moving quickly enough toward your goal or you’re dealing with people who are stressing you, it’s frustrating and easy to lose patience. But you can’t afford to do that as a leader.

Gayle Lantz shares insights about the importance of leadership patience and how to develop it.

Patience is required in many professions and roles, but it’s not often talked about in the context of leadership.

In a world of immediate gratification, increased speed and high stress, exercising patience is even more important. Leaders must know when to accelerate and when to be patient.

Patience is especially important when developing new skills:

Only those who have patience to do simple things perfectly ever acquire the skill to do difficult things easily. ~ James C. Corbett

As Gayle explains, ultimately you need patience for anything that involves other people or a desired result that’s not immediate. Patience requires presence.

She encourages leaders to become more aware of their own patience level and practice more patience where possible.

This episode covers:

  • Risks associated with impatience (increased chance of conflict, misunderstanding, damaged relationships, errors)
  • Why some people may be impatient
  • Benefits associated with leadership patience (better listening, collaboration, relationships, skill development)
  • Ways to develop more patience/ Why tactics alone are not enough
  • The idea of courageous patience
