Nancy Boyd, Author | Soul Mechanic

A school full of children. A man dying on a street. A flood. A fire. A face on the news you couldn't look away from. None of it happened to you. So why does it stay?

Nancy Boyd went looking for something to help. She searched among colleagues and professionals in her field for a practice built for the grief people absorb by witnessing the world's tragedies. She looked for decades. She didn't find one.

So she built it.

That's the pattern, says Boyd, an author, coach, and consciousness practitioner who has worked as The Soul Mechanic since 1999. "It's been true of just about everything I've built," she said. "I see a need, I can't find anyone meeting it, or meeting it the way I see to, and so I build it."

Here are four she's bringing forward now.

1. A place for grief that doesn't feel like ours to claim. The Tending Room is a private, returning practice for the grief people carry from witnessing tragedy. Almost no one feels entitled to mourn it, because it didn't happen to them. It is a self-guided healing practice, not therapy or crisis care. Support resources are available at every step. What a user writes stays in their own browser. It's one of a collection of apps Boyd built for the moments a guide can't be in the room.

2. A way of guiding people that goes further than solving the problem. Boyd noticed that people who had solved their problem still weren't fully living in their truth. She calls her answer soul mastery in conscious evolution: recognizing your essential self at its deepest and learning to run your life from it, instead of from persona and reaction. It is led rather than taught. People experience the shift instead of downloading content. It starts with one question she says she asks herself about five thousand times a day: What's going on? Boyd is clear that mastery is not enlightenment. She hasn't attained that.

3. A way to see how someone operates, and what keeps getting in the way. The Soul Type Assessment grew out of three decades of Boyd's own observations of how people operate and where they keep getting stuck. It is not a personality test. It isn't built on anyone else's system. It looks at a person's essence, not their skills.

4. A way for a stranger to find any of it. Boyd's website had grown the way good garages do. A bay for the books. A bay for the sessions. A collection of apps, a Substack, a YouTube show, a community. Each was happy to see you. None knew who should do the greeting. She wanted a page that orients people by what they want and where they're ready to start. Start Here, now live at brightwings.com/start/, begins with the free assessment and offers four doors: read and explore, learn on your own, talk it through, and go deeper with others. It's the front desk.

The need for guides is growing. The 2025 ICF Global Coaching Study, conducted by PwC, counts a record 122,974 coaching practitioners worldwide. Annual revenue reached $5.34 billion, up 17 percent since 2023. Boyd's advisors expect demand for skilled guides in soul mastery and self-development to rise sharply.

"There are more guides than ever," said Boyd. "I'd rather contribute what's missing than add to what's already there."

Start Here is also candid about where Boyd's one-to-one work begins: with people who have already started working on themselves.  That's where the real traction lives.
