One positive thing about returning to work after Labor Day is that the next weekend is just a little bit closer. Enjoy The National Book Festival, run a race at Mount Vernon, check out the last weekend of Parade at The Kennedy Center and much more.

Get Your Read On at the National Book Festival

Celebrating 25 years this year, the National Book Festival will be Saturday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. Authors that are set to appear include Geena Davis (yes, that Geena Davis), Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett and for the millennials out there, R.L. Stine (author of the Goosebumps series). More information on the festival can be found here.

Celebrate Legends at The Wharf is This Saturday
Honor women in sports at The Wharf Saturday from noon to 6 p.m. for the annual Legends & Legacy event. The Wharf’s Transit Pier will transform into a family-friendly hub for sports and female empowerment. There will be activities like a golf simulator, talks with Olympians, sports journalists and other athletes, the U.S. Open Women’s Final on a big screen and more. More information can be found here.

Mosaic Theater Presents “Dodi & Diana”

Playing now through September 28 at Mosaic Theater, Dodi & Diana is a new play that explores questions of identity, freedom and sexuality. It’s set during the 25th anniversary of Princess Diana and Dodi Fayed’s deaths in 2024, and gets into the marriage of an imaginary couple while finding similarities to Dodi and Diana’s real-life, ill-fated romance, More information on the show can be found here.

Run a 10-Miler or 5K at Mount Vernon on Sunday

This Sunday from 7 a.m.-12 p.m., register for the George Washington Patriot Run. Participants can either do a 10-miler or a 5K race, all with our first president’s mansion in view. Those who run the race get a t-shirt and finisher medal. This year marks the 10th annual event. More information on how to register can be found here.

It’s the Last Weekend for Parade

The musical Parade, about Leo and Lucille Frank, a newlywed Jewish couple, is in its last weekend at The Kennedy Center. Leo is accused of a crime, resulting in a test of humanity, faith and devotion. More on tickets can be found here.

Cycle Through Town with D.C. Bike Ride

The DC Bike Ride returns this weekend.


A 20-mile ride through the city brings first-timers, casual riders and experienced cyclists for a sense of community and a little motivation for a healthy, sustainable lifestyle. Proceeds from the D.C. Bike Ride go toward local nonprofit initiatives. More information can be found here.

Check Out the D.C. State Fair This Weekend

Celebrate D.C.’s agricultural, artistic and cultural talents at the D.C. State Fair this Saturday. Enjoy live music, demonstrations and educational workshops for the family. There will also be plenty of contests to check out, including best chili, cake, jams and jellies and more. More information on the fair can be found here.

The Lumineers Play Nats Park

Indie folk band The Lumineers are are Nats Park Saturday evening for a concert, along with special guests Vance Joy and Chance Peña. The Lumineers are perhaps most famous for their song “Ho Hey,” which was released in 2012. More information on the concert can be found here.
