Tontine Cafe & Silver Exchange Is Much More Than a Coffee House — It Is an Economic Engine

New venture combines coffee, commerce, community currency, entrepreneurship, and local economic development

GREENSBORO, N.C., June 2, 2026 — Most coffee shops sell beverages. Tontine Cafe & Silver Exchange intends to create something much larger: a community-based economic engine designed to encourage entrepreneurship, local commerce, savings, investment, and economic education.

Inspired by the historic Tontine Coffee House of New York City, which helped give rise to what eventually became the New York Stock Exchange, Tontine Cafe & Silver Exchange seeks to revive the original role coffee houses once played as gathering places for business leaders, innovators, investors, and community builders.

"Historically, coffee houses were not simply places to drink coffee," said Mitchell P. Davis, founder of Tontine Cafe & Silver Exchange. "They were places where ideas were exchanged, businesses were launched, partnerships were formed, and fortunes were created. We want to bring that spirit back"

More Than Coffee

  • Entrepreneur networking events
  • Business startup workshops
  • Public speaking and leadership programs
  • Community investment education
  • Local currency and silver-backed exchange concepts
  • Economic development initiatives
  • Educational programs for young entrepreneurs

The organization is exploring innovative ways to encourage local commerce through silver-based exchange systems, community reward programs, and educational initiatives designed to help individuals better understand savings, investing, and entrepreneurship.

"Our goal is not merely to sell coffee," Davis said. "Our goal is to create an environment where people can improve their financial future, launch businesses, learn new skills, and build stronger communities"

Coffee May Bring People Through the Door. Opportunity Keeps Them Coming Back.

The project also envisions serving as a hub for community organizations, educational programs, speakers, writers, journalists, and local business leaders who want to share ideas and collaborate on projects that create economic opportunity.

Future initiatives under consideration include business incubator programs, local merchant partnerships, educational scholarships, speaker series, community currencies, silver exchange programs, and entrepreneur mentoring networks.

"We believe every community needs places where people come together to create value," Davis said. "Coffee may bring people through the door, but opportunity is what keeps them coming back"
