For most people it’s uncomfortable to think outside the box. The box today is symbolic of the standard way of thinking or following the conventional ways of doing business. Yet almost all great moments in history are defined by unconventional thinking. Breaking the compact is often the first step in obtaining real success. Breaking the rules is a business imperative.

If you can break away from following conventional thinking you will have a huge advantage. For a few individuals there is no box, these persons are blessed in a way that can be very stressful. If you are one of the few who can think in these terms you will find yourself beset by timid souls who either cannot understand or even appreciate your concepts.

Don’t take my word for it, let’s look at it from a different perspective. Innovation requires that conventional thinking be thrown out the window. That’s right the only way to gain an advantage over the status quo is to innovate. Looking back through time and it’s always been innovation – inventors if you will, that have advanced, industry, society and even the destiny of nations. All truly great military leaders have embraced these same concepts – by doing what was thought impossible.  From Alexander, Caesar, Nelson, Washington, Nimitz and Patton they all understood that doing what others thought impossible was a clear path to victory. Those who think only of the impossible – they live within that box, comfortable as that box may be it can never lead to victory or success. At best that comfortable box will give you mediocrity or failure and never victory. Burn that box and you will be well motivated to succeed beyond the dreams of those timid souls.

In 1519 when Cortes landed in the new world he burned his ships, this unconventional act cemented his conquest – by necessity. So burn your box and be willing to roll the dice, cross your Rubicon and embrace the game.
