Think about your best learning experiences for a second. Don’t worry, I’ll wait.
Chances are some of them involve an expert or wise person, a mentor, or a coach sharing experiences and knowledge with you. There is no doubt that is one effective way to learn. But chances are some of your thoughts drifted to times when you learned with others. These likely weren’t passive moments, but in times of mutual conversation, exploration, or experimentation. In other words, times of peer learning.
Now think specifically about many of your learning experiences in the workplace. Again, many of the most powerful were when you were learning with others. You can’t escape it – our experience shows that peer learning is a powerful source of learning.
Yet most of the formalized learning at work doesn’t have much or any of a peer component – especially in our current post-pandemic world. Many of the best workshop experiences have moved online. And while there is a chat function, it hasn’t truly replicated a table group discussion in a classroom (and this assumes your sessions are even trying to do that).
For a variety of reasons beyond the scope of this article, learning is becoming more and more about the expert sharing and us listening or watching. We are then left to translate this into meaningful skills and application on our own.
It Doesn’t Have To Be That Way
That’s why I’ve created a new webinar, How Peer Learning Can Transform Results. You (and any of your interested peers, colleagues, and teammates) can join us for free on either September 28 at 3 pm ET or September 29 at 9 am ET. We will explore:
- Describing the power of peer learning situations.
- Creating peer learning opportunities for yourself and others.
- Transforming your webinars and presentations into more effective learning experiences.
While we will be on the Zoom platform, you will experience some of the ideas we are talking about!
Whether you are a leader looking to help your team learn, are in L&D, HR, or OD looking for ways to create more powerful learning, or are looking for ways to create more powerful learning for yourself personally, you owe it to yourself to join us. I promise you will leave with new ideas, insights and inspiration.
