I am honored to participate in a Summit focused on helping parents and grandparents. My contribution will be Heartspace® for Sobriety, teaching one committed family member how to protect children and teens from addiction before a crisis ever occurs. It is equally effective once addiction has become habitual, so don’t give up; I can teach you this.
For 27 years, I have worked with families facing emotionally overwhelming situations involving addiction, family conflict, depression, anxiety, secrecy, emotional disconnection, and self-destructive behaviors. Again and again, I have observed that prevention begins long before a child is offered drugs or alcohol.
Children and teens who feel emotionally safe, emotionally connected, deeply loved, and truly heard at home are protected from many of the most dangerous aspects of grooming because they are unwilling to destroy their bodies, brains, futures, and relationships with dangerous substances and behaviors.
The Heartspace® for Sobriety Method teaches parents and grandparents how to recognize emotional warning signs early, create daily emotional connection, and build relationships based on trust, compassion, emotional safety, and unconditional love.
One of the simplest tools is also one of the most powerful.
Eye-gazing is a tool that everyone can use. Spend a few minutes every day looking sweetly and calmly into the eyes of a child or teen so they know they are accepted, valued, respected, and loved rather than judged. When you offer calm attention, genuine listening, warm eye contact, compassion, and unconditional love, a level of healing and connection becomes possible that you and your loved one may never have experienced before.
When children feel emotionally connected to even one parent or grandparent, it creates a powerful layer of protection that can prevent:
Drug abuse
Alcohol use
Vaping
Depression and emotional isolation
Secretive behavior
Low self-worth and hopelessness
Other self-destructive coping mechanisms
Anxiety and emotional withdrawal
Risk-taking behaviors
Your goal is not perfection.
The goal is emotional safety, emotional connection, and unconditional love, which shifts everything.
What simple daily habit helped you feel loved, supported, and emotionally safe as a child?
I’d love to hear your thoughts.
