The Georgetowner has created a Thanksgiving road trip playlist for your upcoming travels. Enjoy these tunes chosen by our staff for the perfect accompaniment to your holiday journey. You can find this playlist below and on our Spotify page.

  • “Heads Carolina, Tails California” by Jo Dee Messina – Our copy editor Richard Selden submitted only the YouTube link to the music video for this song, because quite simply, there’s nothing else to be said. The tune instantly gets us pumped to go for a long drive.
  • “The Fate of Ophelia” by Taylor Swift – Our fall intern, Mia Pech, is a Swiftie who adores this newest tune by Swift from her The Life of a Showgirl album.
  • “Movin’ Out (Anthony’s Song)” by Billy Joel – Annabel Taylor, a summer intern who stayed on with us this fall, submitted three choices, including this Billy Joel classic from the 1977 album The Stranger. From Annabel: “The song signifies a crossroads moment and a new beginning for the character — both of which the adventure of a road trip can offer. The song even ends with the sound of a car revving up through the gears and driving away. Beyond its subject matter, Movin’ Out is a blast to sing along to with family, making it the perfect song for a long car ride.”
  • “Mess Around” by Ray Charles – I (Director of Content and Advertising) Kate Oczypok adore this song because it’s from one of my favorite movies (and favorite Thanksgiving movie of all time!) Planes, Trains and Automobiles. There’s nothing funnier than John Candy driving and swerving all over the road as he dances in his seat to the classic song.
  • “You Belong With Me (Taylor’s Version)” by Taylor Swift – Another Swift submission from our intern Mia, this song by Swift is the perfect one to sing along as you drive home for Thanksgiving.
  • “Graceland” by Paul Simon – Intern Annabel’s second submission, “Graceland” is the titular track of Simon’s bestselling album. Annabel writes, following a divorce, Simon wrote the song about a father-son trip to the Elvis Estate in Memphis Tennessee, with the mansion serving as a metaphorical destination of solace after heartbreak. The lyrics symbolize the simultaneous uncertainty and exhilaration that accompanies traveling to a new place, which can often involve emotional reckoning.
  • “Mr. Brightside” by The Killers – Any fellow millennials here? Between this song being one of my core college memories and easy-to-sing lyrics, it’s a great one to blast on a road trip. My husband is a big Buffalo Bills fan and this is their hype song, so I have been hearing it quite often this fall!
  • “American Girl” by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers – The final song submission from Annabel, she likes this song because it recalls vintage Americana imagery like driving down back roads on a crisp autumn day.
  • “One Week” by Barenaked Ladies – Another great option from my youth, it was always a fun challenge with friends and siblings to see who actually knew all the words.
  • “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)” by The Proclaimers – Anyone else already singing in their head “and I will walk 500 miles, and I would walk 500 more”? This is another great one to sing as your navigating American highways and byways.
  • “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas” by Bing Crosby – If you’re on a Thanksgiving road trip, you must include at least one holiday song! This classic by Bing Crosby is a great option to get you excited for the season and nostalgic for holidays past.
