The Caring Generation® Radio: Patient Education Strategies

Golden CO- Caregiving expert Pamela D. Wilson hosts The Caring Generation® family talk radio program for caregivers and aging adults this coming Wednesday, October 14th, on the Bold Brave Media Network. The program airs live at 9 p.m. EST. The Caring Generation® aired initially from 2009 to 2011 on 630 KHOW-AM in Denver, Colorado.

Caregiving: Patient and Caregiver Education Strategies

The topic of this caregiver radio program is patient education strategies from a consumer view. If you're like most consumers, you hear the words patient education strategy, and you're wondering what this means. Patient education is a term used by the healthcare system to help caregivers and patients of all ages understand medical conditions—but this doesn't always happen.

While the healthcare system believes that they have formal patient education strategies, consumers, patients, and caregivers would likely disagree. Most consumers are unaware of the significance of health diagnosis. Fewer are aware of actions to prevent health from worsening. Physicians pressed for time with a requirement to see a certain number of patients each day don't have the time to educate patients.

The Risks of Poor Health Literacy

According to the Center for Health Care Strategies, Inc., low health literacy can result in:

  • Medication errors
  • Poor communication between healthcare providers and patients
  • Advancing health conditions due to a lack of understanding of preventative actions
  • Unnecessary emergency room visits

While consumers may take medications, most cannot explain the why, the condition addresses by the medicine, or the goal of taking the drug. For example, reducing high blood pressure.

Many elderly attend medical appointments without genuinely understanding their health diagnosis and the importance of follow up care. Consumers miss preventative visits and screenings because of the lack of discussion and understanding of the benefits. On this caregiving radio program, Wilson shares information about the gaps to explain how consumers, patients, and caregivers can be more proactive to address health concerns that have significant effects on daily quality of life.

Pamela's Guest is Eric Carlson, Directing Attorney from Justice In Aging

The rights of the elderly and their caregivers who desire to visit have been increasingly in the news due to COVID and communities closing their doors to limit outside visitors. Attorney, Eric Carlson, joins Pamela D Wilson to talk about nursing home resident's rights. Eric has broad experience in many forms of long-term services and supports (LTSS), including home and community-based services, nursing facility care, and assisted living facilities.

He led Justice in Aging's extensive research (funded through The Commonwealth Fund) on Medicaid-funded assisted living and currently is leading a project to help consumer advocacy on Medicaid managed LTSS in Florida and New Jersey. He counsels attorneys from across the country and co-counsels litigation on consumers' behalf. Mr. Carlson serves as President of the National Assisted Living Consumer Alliance and is author of the legal treatise Long-Term Care Advocacy (Matthew Bender and Co.).
