The Caring Generation® - Caring for My Elderly Mother Is Killing Me

Golden CO- Caregiving expert Pamela D. Wilson hosts The Caring Generation radio program for caregivers and aging adults this coming Wednesday, January 29, on the Bold Brave Media Global Network. The program airs live at 9 p.m. EST. The Caring Generation® aired initially from 2009 to 2011 on 630 KHOW-AM in Denver, Colorado.

The caregiving topic for this week's program is My Elderly Mother Is Killing Me. The factors that contribute to this feeling are caregiving situations that can be frustrating and the intentional or unintentional behaviors of family members involved in caregiving situations.

Pamela confirms, "I talk with many caregivers who feel that their daily lives are out of control. Others are embarrassed to admit the anger and frustration they feel as the result of caring for an elderly parent. In my twenty years as a caregiving advocate, these feelings are commonly experienced by caregivers who feel they have no other options. When caregivers learn to look at the situation differently, their lives and care situations improve."

Guest, journalist Maya Dusenbery, shares the topic of bias in women's health care. Maya shares how her health care experience led her to research that led her to write the book Doing Harm: The Truth About How Bad Medicine and Lazy Science Leave Women Dismissed.

In this episode of The Caring Generation Radio show for caregivers and aging adults, Pamela shares Seven behaviors that successful caregivers avoid. Complaining may make caregivers or elderly parents who need care to feel better, but venting won't improve the situation. Complainers who have this habit may not realize that they complain until they start driving others away.

The drain of complaining results in caregivers who say that they want to run away from caring for an elderly mother or father because the situation is abusive, time-consuming, or is affecting their physical and emotional health. Becoming a caregiver is an unexpected role with responsibilities that continue to grow unless the caregiver is proactive from the start.

Caregivers fall into the habit of worrying and may do nothing or lack the insight to improve the situation. Pamela shares recommendations to avoid negative behaviors and to have uncomfortable conversations with elderly mothers, fathers, spouses, and family about the help that caregivers need. Most importantly, learning to set boundaries to avoid becoming overcommitted and exhausted.

The January 29th edition of The Caring Generation gives caregivers positive suggestions so that saying "Caring for My Elderly Mother is Killing Me," becomes less frequent. All of The Caring Generation radio shows offer tips and solutions to help caregivers feel more in control of caregiving relationships and situations.
