Looking at the world with young hearts and Science one measure at a time

"Once upon a time"….fado, fado…. all over the world telling a story seems to unite, challenge and evoke the imaginations of children.  But what if these stories inspire more than human imagination; they embed a possibility in young minds?

What if dreams, simply expressed, in good packaging, from jokes to proverbs, to great children's books, actually have been the means around the campfire where families passed on challenges, solutions, and the "mission"? Somehow a tale well told seems "Prometheus' Fire" wrapped in The Hero's Journey, and seems like Big Bird and "Into the Woods" or "The Flash" and Marvel, Star Trek and the like that we have passed our values and longings to the next generation?

We are watching different states, countries, and universities, teachers, and Boards of Education struggle with what they want to pass on using different tools, may surprise you.

Let's look the efforts of learning labs, grants, curriculum writers, and new apps that will be presented at conferences, promoted in social media, and picked up by classrooms and by children and the very best will echo in the "hearts and minds" of their students.

Lacking gathering round the bonfire in the desert, urban and rural children all over the world will be and are now being challenged to solve problems and this is the "Jack in the Beanstalk" "children will listen" moment we find ourselves in given the integration of screen, television, lap top, program and innovative teachers, parents, kinder parents, graduate students and arts educators.

There are librarians, reading coaches, and math volunteers, Big Brothers and Sisters, poets, and musicians that know this secret.  For Clean Air Day tomorrow, and for those who have led the LA River Clean up day, or for Ireland's Arbor day on October 4th, what will be added to the "power of a great story" discussed in Killarney on the GLOBE Learning Expedition this summer at the Glen Eagle Hotel and Conference Center and using Pasco and Vernier digital measurement tools along the Lower Torc is real time data collection and social interaction.  There seems to be nothing like standing up with your friends and sharing what you've discovered.  Likewise finding out about variables can be breathtaking and like Cisco in "the Flash" you may be making it up as you go, but doing nothing is not an option.

There are stressed trees in the San Fernando Valley and people and wildlife and starting with a story about farm animals solving problems at the root of a tall "Crann" (tree) may just be a way to chunk big problems and complexities down to an archetypal level. New Education Options will be working with the Acorn, Snail and Horse with Folkmanis puppets and elementary school researchers soon.  Kids First.la will bring STEM/STEAM together along with their new site official opening in Woodland Hills on October 21st.  This month may have ghouls and daggers at the end of the month, but it will also be a fall full of Science measurements, tree resiliency activities here and in the Amazon and with Rain Forest Handouts at the LA Zoo. Whether you are watching the weather or watching a rain barrel this weekend or studying a protocol and learning about what you can do with the SWAT Mosquito Lab https://www.mosquitolab.org), there is a lot to do online and in Nature that can bring the classroom closer to Nature and bring Math alive through entering data with friends!

Join us, joining those learning about NASA's ICESat-2 Earth research:

"On Tuesday, 23 October, the Trees Around the GLOBE Student Research Campaign webinar "Collect Earth: Live from Oregon USA with Researcher Peder Nelson," will be held at 2:00 p.m. EDT (6:00 p.m. UTC).

During this webinar, Peder Nelson will introduce and detail the "Collect Earth" online tool. This tool is designed so that users can analyze high and very high-resolution satellite imagery for different purposes, including: land cover, land use, and forest mapping. Peder will also discuss why we need ground-based photos, including clouds and land cover, via the GLOBE Observer App. A Collect Earth connection to wildlife (mosquitoes) will also be highlighted. (Prior to the webinar, it is recommended that all participants visit the Collect Earth Website.)
