The aim of the study was to evaluate the effects of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) on a pediatric population (n=25, ages 8-15)  suffering from Persistent Post Concussive Syndrome (PPCS) after TBI, with ongoing symptoms for at least six months after injury, in a randomized, sham-control, double blind clinical trial.

The study suggests that HBOT improves both cognitive and behavioral function, PPCS symptoms, and quality of life in pediatric PPCS patients at the chronic stage, even years after injury. Additional data is needed to optimize the protocol and to characterize the children who can benefit the most.

Researchers in Israel have published a new Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT) using Hyperbaric Oxygenation to investigate the use of HBOT to treat PPCS. [Read study here.]

The study conducted at the Sagol Center for Hyperbaric Medicine and Research shows that hyperbaric oxygen therapy significantly improves memory, emotion, and behavioral symptoms, and heals brain structure in cortical regions.

“Persistent post-concussion syndrome (PPCS) is a common and signifcant morbidity among the pediatric population following traumatic brain injury (TBI). Mild TBI (mTBI) accounts for over 90% of all TBI in children, afecting more than 10% of children under the age of 16. Although most of the children recover completely in a short period of time, about 10–30% sufer from PPCS, lasting from months to years. PPCS has a significant effect on a child’s quality of life, school performance, family function and activities. A recent survey confirmed that PPCS is underdiagnosed as over 25% of the children coming to the ED due to mTBI will suffer from PPCS.

“This is the first randomized sham-controlled trial evaluating HBOT’s effect on pediatric PPCS patients in a prospective manner. We found that HBOT induces significant improvements in cognitive function, PPCS, behavioral symptoms and quality of life. The main improved cognitive domains include memory (in both Neurotrax, WISC-IV, RAVLT and verbal fuency) and executive function (in 5PT and trail making). Behavioral symptom changes included executive functioning and attention difculties. These findings were associated with brain microstructural changes in the frontal, temporal and the paralimbic regions associated with cognitive roles.”
