On Thursday, Nov. 20, The Georgetowner’s Cultural Leadership Breakfast Series will present a talk by Keegan Theatre Artistic Director Susan Marie Rhea. Admission to the event, at 1310 Kitchen & Bar, 1310 Wisconsin Ave. NW, is $40, payable in advance at georgetowner.com or via Eventbrite.
Rhea was named artistic director in 2017 after a decade as associate artistic director of the company, founded in 1996. She joined Keegan as an actor after training at New York’s Circle in the Square Theatre School. While continue to act, she has directed or co-directed nearly two dozen productions, receiving six Helen Hayes Award nominations and winning once.
Keegan purchased its current home at 1742 Church St. NW, east of Dupont Circle, in 2013, reopening the renovated building two years later. Since touring a production of Tennessee Williams’s “A Streetcar Named Desire” to Ireland in 1999, the company has performed many classic American plays there. Rhea and Keegan founder Mark A. Rhea were married in Galway in 2003 during a tour of Edward Albee’s “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf.”
At the Nov. 20 breakfast, she will talk about Keegan’s niche in the D.C. theatre scene and the planning that goes into a season of productions, including the season now underway.
