At the Mugsy store at 3112 M St. NW, customers walk into a modern retail space with free drinks, D.C.-themed decorations and a wide selection of clothes designed for comfort.
A men’s clothing store that began as an e-commerce brand, Mugsy opened its first brick-and-mortar store in Chicago in 2020. Now, Mugsy operates eight retail stores, the newest of which opened in Georgetown in late 2025.
Mugsy Regional Stores Manager Diego Vela emphasized that, although Mugsy has traditionally been a menswear brand, the company’s clothing appeals to a broad range of customers. “All of our stuff is for anyone who enjoys comfort,” he said.
Alongside jeans and other bottoms, Mugsy sells tops, hats, belts and socks. Vela said that each Mugsy location tries to engage with and support the local community. For example, the Georgetown location offers beers from local companies.
Georgetown Store Manager Saivon Wilks said a unique aspect of Mugsy jeans is their stretch. “You don’t really get stretchy jeans for men,” he said.
Vela added that Mugsy is “classic,” which sets the brand apart from similar stores nearby. The company is not a fast-fashion brand and instead focuses on intentionally sourced, high-quality clothing designed to last past temporary trends. Vela said that the fabrics used, as well as where and how the clothes are made, are “very intentional.”

According to Vela, Mugsy’s best-selling jean is the “Mugsy fit,” a straight-leg jean. “Skinny jeans come and go, but the straight is classic menswear,” he said.
While Mugsy has traditionally catered to men, Wilks said the customer base is more diverse than people may assume. In fact, according to Wilks, many different types of people come into the Georgetown store. He and Vela both said that women often shop at Mugsy for an oversized, “boyfriend” jean fit, as well as for Mugsy’s stretchy crewnecks.
Vela said it is important for customers to feel comfortable when they walk into the store; employees strive to make connections with them. Pants shopping can be an intimate experience, he said, and Mugsy employees work to create a welcoming environment where customers feel at ease.
“We’re open and greeting and smiling. We offer beverages, you have some good music going on,” Wilks said. “We try to make it personal for everybody.”
The downstairs area of the Georgetown store is currently under construction, and Vela said they are hoping to open a small golfing area. He added that other Mugsy locations host events to engage with the local community. For example, the Mugsy store in Austin hosted a comedy night.
Vela said opening a store in Georgetown was a natural choice due to the neighborhood’s diversity and strong sense of community. Going forward, the Georgetown store hopes to collaborate with more local businesses and residents.
“Our company is bigger, but we still operate like a small local business,” he said.
