Monday Inspiration: Experiences vs. Things

have experiencesIs there something out there that you’ve always wanted to do but never have?

Is it because you’ve never had the chance?

Or is it because you’ve never taken or created the opportunity for yourself?

These options might sound the same, but they’re distinctly different.

You Can Have Awesome Experiences

The reality is, most experiences—no matter how outlandish or wild—are enormously attainable.

No, climbing Mount Everest isn’t as easy as visiting Mount Rushmore, but it is still an experience that is entirely within your control—you can train your body and mind, secure the necessary paperwork, save your money, and (eventually) get it done.

Stop Spending on Material Things

Yet, rather than spending our hard-earned dollars and cents on experiences, we all have a tendency to spend our cash on things…

  • New shoes
  • A tailored suit
  • A car
  • A fancy dress
  • Deck furniture

…the list could literally be endless.

But what if—instead of spending so much money on goods and commodities—you started spending a little more money on experiences?

Experiences that have the ability to broaden your potentially narrow horizons and open your eyes to the world?

There’s Nothing Wrong with Wanting Stuff

Before going any further, let’s make one thing clear—this isn’t an indictment of possessions.

There is nothing wrong with buying new shoes, a new suit, or a new car.

Things make us feel good, and there’s value in that. But things don’t define us.

They don’t make us who we are.

Experiences do that.

What Experiences Do You Want to Have?

With that in mind, take some time this week to sit in a quiet space—pen and paper in-hand—and think about some of the experiences you’ve always wanted to have, experiences that, for one reason or another, you have not allowed yourself to have.

This could be anything from bungee jumping off the Auckland Harbor Bridge in New Zealand, to whale watching in Monterrey Bay, to casually walking through Tokyo’s legendary fish markets.

As experiences come to mind, write them down without any hesitation.

When your list gets to be about 10 items long—stop.

Look back on the things you’ve written and highlight your top two. Cross everything else off.

Keep the list handy until the weekend arrives. When it does, go to your favorite coffee shop or library with your laptop and start doing your homework. Figure out what you need to do in the next three months to ensure you can accomplish your two chosen experiences in the next year.

When you’ve outlined everything that you need to do, get to work. Take some action toward doing those things.
