March 17, 2014 - New York, NY – Mentor Our Kids, a non-profit organization committed to increasing the quality and quantity of student mentoring internships available through public, private and non-profit firms, today announced a Best Practices Internship Breakfast Roundtable for May 5, 2014 in Mid-Manhattan.

Too many young people are not finding appropriate jobs and careers because they do not have career- and workplace -related experiences to help them make effective decisions. A study by the Associated Press found that over half of all college students cannot find jobs commensurate with their college degrees. McKinsey found that many young people do not know how to get the right education for a decent job or launch themselves on a viable career path. 

"In 'Why Good People Can't Get Jobs', Wharton Professor Peter Cappelli noted that companies, much more than schools, can provide the solution," noted Jerry Cahn, Ph.D., J.D., President of Mentor Our Kids. "Throughout my career, I've coordinated internships for over 500 students and used the opportunity to provide them with job-related mentoring. For student the result was experiences enabling them to make better decisions concerning courses to take in school and careers to pursue. For the companies, there was increased productivity as interns engaged in meaningful projects for the host companies as well as improved brand recognition. Finally, the Mentors also benefited by getting special projects accomplished, polishing their supervisory skills and knowing they helped a young person who wanted to grow."

 

Mentor Our Kids (www.MentorourKids.org) is hosting a Best Practices Roundtable so Intern Program Coordinators can learn how to maximize the ROI of their programs. Speakers will include CEOs and HROs who successfully coordinate internship programs and want to share their expertise with others. Mentor Our Kids has set a goal of having one million students engaged in mentoring internships in 2015. To help companies increase the ROI on their mentoring internship programs, MOK is developing technical information, social support and program evaluation tools which companies can use.
