?Men and women cheat on their spouses for entirely different reasons,? says infidelity expert Ruth Houston, who is quoted in the current issue
Women?s Health Magazine. Houston, a New York infidelity expert who is frequently called on by the media to comment on infidelity issues in the news, is quoted in an article written by Jennifer Benjamin, which explores some of the reasons for the increase in infidelity among newlywed men and some of the precautions newlywed women can take.
Expanding on her comments in the article, Houston, founder of www.InfidelityAdvice.com and author of
Is He Cheating on You? ? 829 Telltale Signs, points out that married men and married women each have different reasons for cheating on their spouses.
Sexual vs Emotional Reasons for Infidelity Houston, whose ongoing infidelity research spans over 15 years and encompasses both male and female infidelity, says, ?Although there are exceptions, men cheat primarily for sexual reasons, while women cheat primarily for emotional reasons. The top 5 reasons men cheat all relate to sex, whereas the top 5 reasons women cheat are linked to emotional issues.
?Numerous infidelity studies support these findings. In one study, 75% to 80% of the men who admitted to having extramarital affairs said that sex was the primary reason. Only 20% of the woman who were having extramarital affairs said they were cheating purely for sexual reasons.
NOTE: The top 10 reasons men and women cheat are posted on Houston?s Infidelity News and Views blog at
http://infidelitynewsandviews.blogspot.com/ Newlyweds Are Not Immune to Infidelity Houston, whose website, www.InfidelityAdvice.com provides practical advice for both male and female victims of infidelity, urges newlyweds to educate themselves about infidelity. She says, ?No one, especially a newlywed, ever expects infidelity to happen to them, but infidelity can happen to anyone at anytime. No one is immune.?
Houston continues, ?Men need to keep their fingers on the pulse of their marriage. Most cases of female infidelity are preventable, so men should take heed if their wives begin to express dissatisfaction, or a need for emotional intimacy. These issues are easily resolved by an attentive, caring and cooperative husband. Unfortunately, usually by the time the unsuspecting husband discovers his wife is having an affair, it?s too late for him to do anything about it.
Says Houston, ?Wives should be aware that happy husbands cheat, too. Three recent studies published in prestigious medical journals last year, all reported that even good marriages are susceptible to infidelity. So wives should become familiar with the subtle signs of an impending affair, so they can take positive action at the first sign of trouble.?
Most Cheaters Never Get Caught .
Houston says, ?The reality is that most cheaters never get caught. One study found that 70% of married women and 54% of married men did not know about their spouses' affair. In another study, 60% of the cheating spouses said their partner did not know about their affair. However, even undetected infidelity can take its toll on a marriage. So both spouses should familiarize themselves with the signs of infidelity, because early intervention can keep a budding affair from blossoming into a full blown romance, or prevent an affair already in progress from reaching the point of no return.?
Knowing What to Look for is the Key Houston firmly believes that if more husbands and wives knew how to spot the signs of infidelity, more marriages could be saved. Her book,
Is He Cheating on You? ? 829 Telltale Signs ($29, Lifestyle Publications) lists practically every known sign of infidelity, including the subtle signs most people usually overlook. Despite the title, most of the signs in the book apply to both cheating women and cheating men. (Available from www.IsHeCheatingBook.com, Amazon.com, or 1-800-431-1579)
