In my Ten Steps to a Federal Job® classes, Step 8 is Apply for Federal Jobs. And now there is a new, critical piece of information to share with you and everyone you know who is applying for federal jobs.

Make one of your resumes searchable! Why? OPM has created a new way for HR Specialists to find and recruit candidates for their positions. They can go into the ATP and search for candidates for their specific positions. They might search for:

Degree, Years of experience, a specific technical skill, several keywords… and Hiring Authorities.

Glenn Hooks, NPS Recruitment Director explains it this way:

1. Make One Resume Searchable.

The best way to describe the USAJOBS Agency Talent Portal (ATP), the tool that federal recruiters and HR specialists are using for numerous modernized hiring and recruiting methods, provide a means, ONLY IF THEY MAKE THEIR RESUME SEARCHABLE, to mine resumes for qualifications, share certifications of those candidates that were qualified for similar positions but not selected by the hiring official.

2. Add your Hiring Authority to the top of your resume after your email.

Key takeaways from a recruiter – We only view the resume… so, if their Hiring path is not listed in the top portion of the resume, they are missing out having their resume placed into that hiring path folder for further review.

Hiring managers that are looking for a unique hiring authority DHA or Non-competitive, are searching these resumes to fill a position quickly, versus just posting the position on USAJOBS and praying a qualified candidate applies. SO, if the resume doesn’t state up front their eligibility as a military Spouse, Schedule A, Veterans Preference, they may be overlooked.

Example:

JANICE SMITH
Address
City, state, zip
Phone
Email
Post-Secondary Hiring Authority for Students and Recent Graduates
Eligible for 13473, Non-Competitive Hiring Authority for Active-Duty Military Spouses
Eligible for Schedule A Hiring Authority
Veterans Preference
30% or more Disabled Veterans Preference

3. What happens if the resume meets the criteria for the position?

The HR Recruiter will write an email to this candidate and ask if they are interested in a specific position. And if so, the recruitment will begin.

So, if you want to receive emails from federal HR recruiters, mark one resume Searchable, add your Hiring Authority and make it clear what technical skills and abilities you can offer for a federal position.
