Ottawa, ON (May 19, 2010) – CanMediate International Inc. is hosting its cutting edge, interactive five-day conflict management course for workforce professionals called the Power To Resolve™ Certificate Program. The Country Inn & Suites in Kanata, Ontario will be host to this event from June 21 through to June 25, 2010.
Changes to Ontario's Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) are coming on June 15, 2010. These changes define workplace violence and harassment and describe employer duties, and will apply to all workplaces covered by the OHSA. Bill 168 offers protection to the employees of Ontario that have not been written into legislation in the past. This puts a responsibility on employers and managers to educate themselves not only on the legal requirements of the legislation, but also on how to work within it on a day-to-day operational basis to create healthy and productive workplaces.
The legal requirements of the legislation are clearly laid out for employers and managers. Beyond the legal requirements, there is increasing pressure on employers and organizations to create healthy work environments not only through legislation and policies, but also through changes to organizational culture and expectations of employees and management alike. These changes have the potential to influence recruitment and retention as few people enjoy working in an environment filled with animosity and discord. When asked, employees almost universally identify the attributes of a healthy and respectful workplace as the environment in which they would prefer to work.
How do employers, leaders, managers and supervisors create this type of environment? What knowledge and skills are needed to guide organizations through the changes needed to create a respectful workplace? If an organization is currently doing well – how can that level of health and productivity be maintained? The Power to Resolve™ Certificate Program is designed to help people develop these skills and abilities.
Regardless of an organization's role or involvement in implementing Bill 168 policies, the need to understand the role of human interactions, conflict and organizational culture within workplaces and how they contribute to relationship breakdowns, harassment and workplace violence is now a key element of creating a safe and healthy workplace.
The Power To Resolve™ Program has received overwhelmingly positive feedback from participants. Ruth Sirman, President of CanMediate International Inc. is a professional mediator, course instructor, and comes highly acclaimed in the world of conflict management. Ms. Sirman said "As an organization, we are committed to creating healthy workplaces by building internal organizational capacity to manage conflict effectively."
